Summer with Sears: How We Enjoy Our Deck!

I never know what to call my outdoor spaces. Deck? Patio? I am thankful to have more than one deck/porch space. However, I would say none of them function as I would really like for them to function.

I BLAME MY KIDS.

And the dog. I know I am not alone.

I have a deck on the side of my kitchen – which is the area we use most. But when I say “deck” I think people thing “DECK”, and it’s really just a deck. The grill is there, and when we eat outside, that deck is where we go. When the kids are in the pool, I sit there and play lifeguard and fix goggles and fetch towels and drink iced coffee.

Most recently , though… the space has been taken over by buckets that the kids have used as temporary homes for lucky snakes and lizards that have been found with love

We also have a front porch, which is BIG. And covered… and usually decorated with lots of sidewalk chalk, random shoes, tea set pieces, popped balloons and whatever other projects the kids drop and run from.

We also have a back porch area, that has really become Kevin’s glorified hang-out.

Kevin… OUR DOG.

When my deck by the kitchen is not playing temporary home to cold-blooded creatures, that is where we dine outside. I often take my computer out there to work or goof off, and when weather permits (I live in the Pacific NorthWET), it’s our best outside spot to just chill out. Eat ice cream… oh how I love sending the kids outside to eat their ice cream! Though our landscaping just beyond the deck is not my idea of relaxation, I am thankful for the small outside space we do have. Lizards and all.
