An Xbox Cake
I will start this post with honesty. I did NOT make an Xbox cake. Sure… I could have made it… but I didn’t. My sister-in-law made it for my nephew’s birthday last week. I am pretty sure, though, that somehow that cake was inspired by me. Pretty sure. One thing I am certain of, however is this: my sister-in-law is pretty much made out of Awesome. Ya wanna know why? She saved me a row of cake:
But you don’t care about my row of cake… now do you? You want to see the masterpiece created by the genius hands of my SIL… Yes you do… and the “frosting” is fondant:
Pretty incredible – ehh? I helped. I ate a row of cake. I also watched her roll out the fondant. Hey! Here’s a close-up of the controllers. The black knobbies are made out of gum paste:
I made a cake decorated with fondant once. I tried to make fondant ribbons (the cake was supposed to be a wrapped baby shower gift cake). I almost lost my salvation over that. Making fondant defy gravity is not for the faint of heart. I actually made it for my SIL’s baby shower… I ended up having to use curling ribbon for my “present” cake.
It turned out cute despite my failing, but my vision was FONDANT ribbons. I am not happy when my vision … um… is impaired… Anyway… In short, I pretty much attempted to do something even trained professionals run from. So, really, Kerry (my SIL) had it easy compared to me. I mean… alls she had to do was roll out feet of fondant, cut cake into the shape of controllers, research gum paste, cook several cakes, make the frosting to go under the fondant, poke a billion holes, and just a few other detail Xbox-y items.
I leave you with one word of wisdom: if you decide to work with fondant — buy it already made. Do yourself a favor… working with fondant is infuriating, but obviously can have a big pay-off. Don’t add to your burden by making the stuff. You will save a bundle in sanity.
P.S. Did you see the AT-AT Walker cake my SIL made last year? The woman has a gift. And also, did I mention she saved me a row of cake

Last night, I dreamt that I was a master cake decorator. No lie. I place the blame for this restless sleep on the numerous hours of Food Network Challenge I’ve been watching lately. However, even in my dreams, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t make a cake as cool as that!
Wow. Just wow. That is so made of awesome, I can’t even express it.
OK that is just kick ass!!!
Curses on you for showing such a super double yummy cake…that is truly a work of art. Your SIL rocks.
I would have thought that was from a Food Network competition! That is awesome.
And yes, a row of cake is the ultimate display of affection
mmmmmm cake and fondant mmmmmmmm
Oh my…what a talent! Of course, that whole row of cake looks absolutely delicious…and with your long run – you deserved it!
Angela
Wow. That’s a gift, for sure. I’m willing to bet that Bubba’s Sis’ son will give her a run for her money one day! That boy has *the* gift also. Sadly, I do not.
That is so awesome! My best friend does cakes like that…too bad she lives so far away…
Wow! I am impressed! It makes me feel lazy for ordering my son’s first birthday cake from Costco today
That’s a fantastic cake! Great job!
That’s awesome
. What a fun cake! When Jodycakes lived here in LA she did a cake for Zac’s bday … I order out. THAT is not my talent.
Oh wow! What a cake! I don’t even care if it tastes good, I just want to look at it! Can I trade sister-in-laws with you? Okay, fine! Can I just borrow your sister-in-law for, say six days out of the year? Okay, maybe 8 or 9 days so that I can get some holiday cakes also…
Hey girl..have you seen this site- http://www.twitfitter.com/

Triple amazing!!! She should do that for a living.
Yes, she should do that for a living. And I have been right beside you watching my salvation go down the tubes over baking!
