Chocolate Milk… It Does a Recovering Body Good!
I can now check “run 15 miles” off my list of things to do by tomorrow, on account of the fact that — I. Ran. Fifteen. Miles. Today.
I’d say, “You may bow”, but I think some of you might just think I’m nuts and will want to hold an intervention. Besides I don’t need to be bowed towards… in all honesty I could just really use a good foot rub. Anybody???
By the way, can I just say that I am soooo glad that an inherent feature of a good blog is not a “scratch & sniff” feature — because I ran 15 miles today and have not yet had a chance to shower. I digress….
Here’s the deal. I did NOT want to do this run today. I have been following an 18 week training plan, and have been dreading this week for 10 weeks. Or is it a 16 week plan. Whatever. The furthest I’ve run before this was 13.1 miles… not in training, but for half-marathon events. The 15 mile marker has been a huge wall as I saw the passing weeks bring me closer to this day.
I posted on my Facebook wall: “have a 15 mile run slated for this morning. I wonder if I will see any Gomez-Ingram campaign signs… Hope for the future!“ As crazy as I am, I am surrounded by equally crazy and wonderful people who cheered me on as I revealed my trepidation…

As the encouragement came rolling in, I looked through the recesses of my mind for something… ANYTHING that might spur me onto a better attitude. I remembered something that just might keeping me running the rest of my life… You want to know what I did? I researched chocolate milk.
I remembered hearing something about chocolate milk being the best running recovery drink! I said to myself, “Self… You need to change your attitude. What is something that would lift your spirits about this ‘running thing’.” My reply to myself, “THE PERFECT CHEER CHOCOLATE MILK!” It was almost like Craig & Arianna were the ones facilitating the conversation in my mind… Uh huh, uh huh, uh-huh-uh-huh-uh-huh!

So I did what any other experienced researcher would do and I typed, “chocolate milk & running”. A blog called Trailplay turned up a great post — Shizzle! Here is a select portion of the post:
In 2006, the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism published a study conducted at the Indiana University in Bloomington that found, in the words of the scientists and researchers that conducted the study, “Chocolate milk contains an optimal carbohydrate to protein ratio, which is critical for helping refuel tired muscles after strenuous exercise and can enable athletes to exercise at a high intensity during subsequent workouts. It is a strong alternative to other commercial sports drinks in helping athletes recover from strenuous, energy-depleting exercise.” (Source.)
Can I get a “Whut Whut?!” Talk about motivation! I went from zero to 5.5 mph in an instant! You know what I love about choclate milk? Uhhh…. EVERYTHING! You know what you can do to chocolate milk to make it even betterer??? Heat it up and add 2 shots of espresso! My friends… life is good. Life is truly good…
However, I am still not convinced that cookie dough is such a great idea…
