Make We Laugh Monday – Wishing

A WishingChildren. A source of joy and laughter. Their untainted views give a refreshing perspective of life and weeds.

Ahh… the dandelion. In the life of an adult landowner (me) there are few things that are less magical and wonderful than the dandelion that has gone to seed. Those “delightful” balls of fuzz are millions of parachutes of poison to my acreage. They are a source of struggle with the permanence of my salvation as the “sailor” in me fights to have a say.

The cursed dandelion.

Lucy found one of the first dandelions of the season last week.

Mama! Wook! It’s a Wishing!”

I took a moment. I looked around. I saw her eyes twinkle. I bent down,

OK. Let’s Blow…

And we blewwwwwww….. The seeds began to fly, like the baby spiders at the end of Charlotte’s Web… off to take over on the world.

What did you wish for, Lucy?

With out missing a beat, and in a manner so matter-of-fact I think she thought I was out of my mind for even bothering to ask,

Ice cream and marshmallows!

I’ll just blow into the neighbor’s yard. And wish for days off….

Those dandelion fluffies are a symbol of lost innocence. When you are a kid, it so wonderful that something so great grows everywhere and there is no harm in closing your eyes and making wish after wish. When your are an adult, those things make your shoulders slump when you realize the extra work your are now going to have to put into your yard to get rid of the dang things.
    And now I’m depressed.
