Am I Raising Future Used Car Salespersons?

moneyLet’s face it. Times are tight.

Everybody is getting creative… Even the children.

My kids are scheming. Craigslist, eBay, lemonade and cookie stands…

And I am listening… to their perspective on value. As I listen I ask myself, “Where did I go wrong?”

My son just sold his sister 22 little Tootsie Rolls for $3.

And I don’t know what to do… let my daughter “pay” for not really thinking about the value of her dollar? Let my son sell items unfairly priced?

It’s probably all part of growing up – learning how to appreciate the value of a dollar… learning how to be honorable in bartering… learning not to cheat your family.

And here I sit. I think back on their schemes and plans. They face the same issue we all eventually have to face – making money. Whether it’s bubble gum or a house payment…

And it seems my kids are diving head-on into a valuable learning experience — there is no way to get rich (or get iPod Touch) quick. To earn means to work, and if one is getting rich quick, it probably means one is a cheater.

At times like this I wish I was changing diapers instead of teaching morals.

  1. HAHA! 3 dollars for 22 tootsie rolls???

That’s crazy. What is he saving for anyway?
At this rate he’ll have a car in no time at all! LOL.
Glad to see you survived at least one blog post past the insanity…Did you watch my shout out videos yet?
My youtube channel is Chaosbrain76. :) ) I subscribed to you already.

  2. At least her gave her something for her $3. My son charges his vulnerable little sister $3 to enter his room. And she pays it with cash grandma gave her. And no, you are not raising future car salesmen. You are raising future “I work at the mall in the candy shop” people. Totally awesomer.

This is totally my older bother and me! Except he would charge me two dollars to listen to his J. Giles Band tape and another $2 for borrowing his tape player to listen to it on! I always wonder how I had so much money to pay him. It’s got to be a right of passage-Livi is smart and she will figure out, like I did, that we can pay the store instead! Love that story!!

  4. These questions are so beyond me…I say let the cards fall where they may as long as no one gets hurt. How’s that for cliche?

My ‘kids’ are pretty grown up now – but they have the same individual attitude towards $$$’s that they had when they were small. It’s scary! My eldest earns and saves; having it is important. My middle lets it run through her fingers, and enjoys it leaving, and then enjoys the ‘stuff’ it bought… My youngest saves, and then gives the occasional lovely present.
I wonder if there is any scientific proof, money vs. character development?!
