Tooth Fairy Issues and…. Where Do I Surrender My Mom Card?

Those “What to Expect” books are great. They’ve helped guide and prepare parents from the prenatal days through the toddler years.

I guess that’s why they never really got to the topic of the

TOOTH FAIRY…

Because toddlers are still getting their teeth. Not losing them. In general.

Before I go much further… know the Tooth Fairy and our family have had a rough run. Nothing like your Tooth Fairy getting a note that reads, “I have been waiting a very long time…”, eh?

*chest pains*

Lucy lost a tooth last night. She told me yesterday afternoon that she didn’t want Kevin to help pull this one out.

Being the driven child that she is, she worked and worked and worked and got it out.

It had been a bother for several weeks, so we were all very excited.

Loose teeth feel awful. REMEMBER THOSE DAYS.

I felt so bad for her.

You’d think something so significant would mean something.

Like, say… REMEMBERING TO HAIL THE TOOTH FAIRY???!!!

Yep. The Tooth Fairy didn’t come last night.

AGAIN.

This is where I pull back the curtain a little… I know you think I am a perfect parent.

*cough*

So Lucy woke up to an AWOL Tooth Fairy this morning. She was disappointed. Perhaps more than she let on.

A little background… My Lucy is her own person. She marches to the beat of her own drum.

Probably literally.

Her drummer keeps a perfect beat for stopping to smell the roses, stopping to touch the roses, and stopping to also dance and sing in the rose garden.

Read: Lucy is not the speediest. At ANYthing.

So.

Many mornings are difficult. Lucy has no sense of urgency… which does not favorably compliment needing to get out the door and catch a bus and whathaveyou.

I typically check in with her often, often, often to make sure she is on track.

This morning I did my check-in on the late side. As I rounded the corner to her room, I saw her standing.

Just standing. And staring.

By her desk.

Jammies still on.

Hair still bed-heady.

And I lost it.

BECAUSE SHE HAD BEEN UP 20 MINUTES  AND 20 MINUTES IS A LOT OF TIME TO GET NOTHING DONE WHEN THERE IS A BUS TO CATCH.

I yelled at her to get dressed and get it together because we are a family and when ONE of us is not ready, it means ALL of us are not getting to school on time… yadda, yadda.

I also yelled about the messes that didn’t get picked up from the day before.

Despite MANY ASKINGS/TELLINGS.

I just…

In the car on the way to the bus I asked Lucy… because I am just generally curious about what is going on in her head. “Why were you just standing in your room when you knew you needed to be getting dressed this morning, Lucy?”

“Because I thought maybe the Tooth Fairy put the money on my desk and I was looking around on my desk…”

And yes, with Lucy, staring really is looking.

She has her own style.

Hi. My name is Jenny. I am the worst mom ever.

Where do I surrender in my Mom Card?

I should add she couldn’t find any pants, either.

It’s debatable as to who should own that particular problem.

Friends, between laundry and our Tooth Fairy issues… this is the stuff they don’t write about in books.

LAUNDRY AND THE TOOTH FAIRY.

That is the title of my next book.

That is the title of my first book.

Just yesterday my husband and I were watching Lucy play outside alone on the swingset.

We talked about what joy she has added to our family. We talked about how blessed we are that God gave her to us. We talked about how each one of us (brother and sister included) needs Lucy in our lives.

In case you don’t know, she was a bit of surprise…

Her easy-going, no-rush personality is an absolute test and struggle for me.

And inspiration.

I have always wanted to be less tightly wound.

I need her. And clearly, I have so much to learn about parenting my little sprite.

Have mercy on my soul.

I feel terrible.

I mean…

Lucy and the Tooth Fairy

I pray God continues to fill the gap of my/the Tooth Fairy’s failures. Because this girl?… She’s already blessing lives through her heart, and I know God has big plans for great things for his non-urgent little girl.

Hi, I'm Jenny :)
