You missed out on a delicious chocolate malt Sunday p.m.
My great-grandmother passed away over 10 years ago. I adored my Grandma Sue. I still do, and I feel an ache in my heart because I miss her. I wrote a short post about her back in November.
My great-grandma… she rarely shared about her childhood. I tried to help her fill out a “grandma” book once, but she was so uncomfortable sharing her past. When she died, she left some clues behind. Clues that lead my imagination to wander about the life she led. She divorced back in the 30′s (I think), when divorce was most certainly not a “norm”. She was a very independent and stubborn woman who worked hard and raised a son all by herself at a time when I am sure it was a great struggle. She was a strong, strong woman.
I was digging through my little “treasure chest” of clues recently, and I came across the best letter. I scanned the pages, and if you click on the image it will take you to my flickr page where you can view the words more clearly…. cuz I am certainly not going to type it out! The postmark date was 1945. Grandma must have been in her 30′s when a very handsome suitor caught her her fancy…
OH MY GOSH!!! ARE YOU CRYING??? I AM CRYING! Did you read that first paragraph?… continue:
OH MY GOSH! HE DREW PICTURES! ***SWOON***
“… Then the night of the whing-ding he’ll run through a few the steps with you. From then on you’ll savvy what the caller is telling you. Sometimes you’ll maybe zig when you should zag but everybody does that…” I think I’m in love!
The following picture is one of Grandma Sue, probably 15 or more years before this letter. However, I must share it. She is the one in the white dress. What beautiful woman.

Wasn’t sure if I should post a picture of the gentleman who fancied my adorable granny, but I can’t resist… I found i in the envelope with the letter…
I regret I do not really recall what happened between my grandma and this gentleman suitor. If my memory serves me correctly he died rather unexpectedly. I wish I remembered the details. Maybe I should call my mom…

That is so great that you have that letter, and those incredible photos of your Great-grandmother (who was beautiful). It captures a time that has gone by. You can almost see what they are thinking.
Sometimes pictures are better than words.
My grandmother recently showed me some diary entries that her mom kept on her voyage from Germany to Ellis Island. So cool. But they were all in German!! I should really take lessons…
That is very cool that you have stuff like that. I think it’s so neat to get little glimpses of everyday life back in the “good ole days”.
It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that Sue inspired such ardent admiration. She was an amazing, formidable woman and I have always felt blessed that her life brushed by mine.
I miss her too.
Grandma Sue was a beauty inside and out. Just like you!
That is really a treasure! Life seemed so simple then. Your grandmother was beautiful, now I know where you get it.
Oh swooning! Next time we go dancing.. I say we dive for an oyster!
Recently we had a family reunion. My aunt made up little boxes for each family to take home from the weekend. Inside the box were old picture of my grandparents, a few of my grandmother’s recipes, an old coin from my grandfather’s coin collection and a couple of love notes from him to her. They are so sweet and innocent. I love the way they courted each other in those days. Aaahhhhh….maybe I’ll email my sweetheart….or better yet, I’ll send a text….D8 2 nite? C U L8R.
I love this post. I wish people still wrote and talked like that. I wish our “hook-up’s” were called suitors and I wish I could still be called a lady and my husband a gentleman. AND I wish men still woo-ed their lady interests.
I too remember grandma Sue! Great post Jenny! The first thing i thought of was riding around in the back seat of her car…(blue, i think) It is great that you have those letters and pictures to fill in some of the pieces…;-)
Please call your mom! I must know what happened to that darling man. What a treasure you came across! Thanks for sharing.
