The Confessional – It's Still Christmas At My House

It is still Christmas at my house. Not because presents keep pouring in, no… but because, as of this writing – January 16, 2010… the Christmas decorations are still — UP.

*hangs head*

I’m just keepin’ it real for y’allz. I am a classic type-a personality with a scattered-creative alter-ego who obssesses over glitter and fashion accessories. And fame.

Somedays it is just no fun to hang out in my head. I want order, but my alter-go (J-Bling) wants to play. I want timeliness, organization, predictability, and then my alter-ego hides my calendar and sprays glitter in my eyes… reminiscent of a Spitting Cobra.

A Spitting Cobra…

J-Bling…

J-Bling

Practically twins… Except for the scales…

You want to know what else? I orderded my Christmas cards, like BEFORE December hit… and they are still in my home… not hanging on a cork board across the country, bragging about how cute my kids are. Sure, I could send them late and pop in a little letter belly-aching about my self-induced chaos and apologize (likeanyonecares), BUT when I had my daughter stamp the return address on the cards… she also sealed the envelopes — andnowwhatdoIdo?

I am an over-sharer by heart and it kills me to not be able to explain why the Christmas cards are late. And gollysgoshdarnitto-H-E-doublehockeysticks I am gonna send those boogers even if they mail out next year.

Why?

Guilt. I spent the money. And my sense of guilt is FAR stronger than my sense of class.

It’s not that I’d feel guilty for NOT send Christmas cards this year… it’s that I feel guilty for spening money on over 100 Christmas cards that are laying on my floor in my bedroom in sealed envelopes.

Sealed.

And yes, on my floor.

I My alter-ego got this idea a week ago that if I put them in an obvious place (i.e. the middle of my bedroom floor), I would remember to take care of that little project.

(You’re tilting your head to the right in confusion, aren’t you? I can tell by the way my laptop is making churning noises.)

The floor idea? Not so much… now it’s like a fun game of cards, except I’m losing the game and it’s actuall not so fun. I hate losing. But the shuffling… the best part of playing cards is the shuffling, yes?

If you are on my Christmas-turned-Valentine-turned-St.Patrick’sDay card list, and your card is bendy… you’ll know why.

I don’t really know if I am type-a. I just know I WANT things to be one way, but my life demands another. My bliss is an organized sock drawer… matching baskets hiding organized “stuff” on bookshelves. Keys on a hook, coats in a closet, beds made, bills caught-up, laundry folded, 0 emails in my inbox, and veggies chopped.

Shall I confess more?

***wait for it***

When everything is in order and in it’s place… it makes me feel… it makes me feel….

SKINNY!!!

I just want to feel skinny!

*sigh*

Am I the only one dancing with chaos? I like dancing, but…

  1. You’re not alone, girlie. I still have my (gasp) christmas wreath on the front door.

The really sad thing? I forgot about it. A neighbor commented (rather snarkily) yesterday “oh, busy are you? Still have your wreath on your door, ha ha ha”.

Sadder yet, I forgot (again) and didn’t take it down. The tree itself only came down last Saturday. THe box holding all the ornaments is still in the hallway.

Send the cards. I’m still receiving them. Lets just say, they’ll get appreciated more as they won’t get lost in the mix!
    (blows glitter for effect)

We are all with you! We just took the lights off the house and bushes today-and are hoping that by the end of the weekend to have about 8-10 bins out of the ENTRY WAY and back under the house. But you know what-my kitchen is clean and that’s where we live anyway, so I am happy!
Send the card-I also, have been receiving a few these past couple of weeks! And tonight-before taking down all the decorations-turn off all the house lights and turn on all the Christmas lights and enjoy it one more time-guilt free-it truly is magical!

Dude I say you just write a quick note on the envelope. Quick, efficient, and quirky. Do it in a glitter pen and you’re golden.

  4. Dumblond says:

    Oh…
    My…
    Lanta…
It’s like you are looking into my SOUL!!
Do you also lurk on The Container Store website drooling over every little thing that would be abso-farkin-lutely per.fect! in your house?
I need shelves, I need baskets, I NEEEED IT!!!

    Whoa, what happened?

  5. Michelle says:

You know I am your OCD friend:)
Funny about Christmas though, it makes you feel good! I would love to leave it all up ALL. Year. Long.
I love the lights and the smells and the colors and oh how I love that music. If it weren’t for the other 3 people who live here, I might just leave Christmas up FOREVER-(inserts evil laugh-that isn’t meant to be evil) *mwaahahahahaha*.

  6. Maggie says:

Oh Jenny… it’ll be OK. =) *giggling hysterically*

  7. WHAT? Your Christmas decorations are still up?
    You crazy girl.
It’s probably not fun to hang out in my head either cause i’m a writer and sometimes it gets alittle strange up there.
Thanks for following me on twitter. HEY, I checked out your stuff, like I promised.;)
Hope U have a great week!!!

I am totally like you with the Christmas cards. After years of buying, writing, and sealing them only to leave them somewhere and forget to mail them, I gave up.

I don’t do cards anymore. :) It’s surprisingly freeing, actually.

Besides, don’t feel bad-our Halloween pumpkins stayed on our front porch until they were gray with mold and looked like flat shrunken heads.

People always say that I’m so organized but the reality is that I’m just really good at faking it. Lolol!

  9. I’m with you completely. My Christmas tree is still standing tall fully decorated. Because it’s an artificial one it’s not creating a fire hazard. Years ago my deadline for taking my tree down was before school resumed. Now that I’m retired and not rushing back to classes, I just seem to have more important and interesting things to do each day than take down and store all those ornaments.

As for Christmas cards, I did get most of mine sent out before Christmas, but I just sent out a remaining few to people I forgot in the first wave.

The way I look at it, the world can stand the spirit of Christmas year round. So a tree still up at Valentine’s Day or Christmas greetings received in March are a good thing. Go for it! Whose life is it anyway!

  10. phesoj says:

I vote for you just saving the cards til June then send them out. This way you bring back the memorys from Christmas 09 and you prepare them for Christmas 10.

  11. Phesoj,

    I agree with you wholeheartedly.

  12. Carina says:

Just write, “The post office totally lost this letter that’s why it didn’t come in time” on every envelope.

And it’s still Christmas at my house. I’ve been too busy working to put everything away. Yesterday I had had it. I went into the living room and started taking the ornaments down. I ordered the kids to take everything off the tree and sort them. Then I had to go nurse and put the baby down and now it’s all still in there. Even messier than when I started. Lawsy.

The wreath’s off the door! (It’s on my living room floor.)

  13. Joanna Sprik says:

Fear not my friend! My Christmas tree is still up, I didn’t send and don’t plan to send a single Christmas card (we send out prayer letter’s in October/November and figure that’ll do, lol)and we just took down our icicle lights day before yesterday and only because we wanted to get them down before the weather got too cold! ;)
