Silent Birth?
I had not intended to remark on the personal birthing choice of two celebs who have been filling up the headlines lately. The concept of silent birth means there should be no noise during the birth and the baby should not be spoken to for a week after. This supposedly keeps the trauma of birth to a minimum. I wonder if L. Ron Hubbard ever hear what a baby has to say after he/she comes into the world…
Genuine encouraged me to \”cut and paste\” the comment I left at his blog post about this insane concept. One of my favorite quotes in Genuine\’s post said,
I don\’t know about other births, but the four I have been witness to were not quiet, and when the baby came out, he wanted a serious explanation, a warm blanket and his mommy!

In my comment I went back to the birth of my son, my first child…
Here\’s a beautiful illustration why this philosophy sucks… The baby can\’t see, and if it could – because it was in the womb, it wouldn\’t know dad or mom from any other human. It is the voice that soothes in the beginning…
My point, one of my most treasured pictures of my son was taken moments after birth. He was \”looking\” at his dad – my precious husband. My son had been screaming because he didn\’t like being on a scale any more than his mama
My husband leaned over and spoke to him – to his very first child. I\’ll never forget (and the fact that we got a picture of it is stinkin\’ beautiful) how my son immediately stopped crying. And though he had newborn vision, he looked at his dad and just listened. Looked (in the general direction of a fuzzy facial blob) and listened. He recognized a familiar voice in a sea of newness. Comfort, calm… that was what baby needed…

That is exactly what I was trying to articulate. I knew it seemed wrong and you\’ve got it in one. Thanks for the words.
I think celebrities should just keep their mouths shut. Excellent post. Thanks for stopping by yesterday.
That is so true. The idea of a silent birth is insane to me. Michele sent me.
What a heart-warming little story.
I feel the clinically robotic nature of such a thing as a \”Silent Birth\” seems devoid of all that is natural and paternal.
\”I think celebrities should just keep their mouths shut\”, that\’s right – it\’s called a Silent Birth : )

Hi, Michele sent me!
What a beautiful story and so true. I talked to my girls all the time in the womb and seemed so natural to continue the conversation when they came out.
The whole “being silent” concept is crazy to me.
That is just ridiculous! \”Silent Birth\”…come on! I don\’t have babies yet, but when I do, I want mine and my love\’s voice to be the very first thing they hear. And I\’m not sure what I think about anyone who thinks a newborn should be void of all voice contact for an entire week! Hearing has been proven to be the last of the senses to \”go\” at the time of death, why should we believe it shouldn\’t be the first at the time of birth???
Thanks for the kind words on my site, love yours! Will definetly be back.
Silent birth?? It seems like a very unnatural way to me. What\’s wrong with noise, it hasn\’t hurt any of us!!
I think that your comment is perfect. Having been through this experience recently I would agree with you wholeheartedly. I\’m glad that you got that experience on camera. Wonderful post.
Thank you for the comment on my blog during a sad and hard time for me. It going to take some time but I think that I will be happy again.
A silent birth and not talking to your baby for a week! Out of control and so weird! Tom Cruise just gets weirder and weirder. To think that I had a huge crush on him in Top Gun, then again, who didn\’t?
hi there jenny, michele sent me
and i\’m glad she did because i enjoyed your post.
i don\’t know how one can keep silent when you are having a baby – and how can you not want to coo your little one when he/she arrives?!? celebrities!!!
the idea of silent birth is ridiculous, to say the least! it is most definitely unnatural. whoever thought this up must\’ve been on drugs…or just plain crazy… hello, michele sent me.
Amen, amen, and amen! I couldn’t agree with you more and I think that those “certain celebrities” are just batshit crazy!!
Thanks for stopping by my site
Silent birth??? There is one thing for sure about it…a MAN thought this one up!!
Neglecting the newborn for a week…..sounds like this same man was a jealous husband.
Those who practice this foolishness don’t deserve the precious child entrusted to them! If a woman could disregard the strongest urge in the world….to touch, hold and speak to her newborn…I believe that she is capable of anything!
