As I expected, Joel’s cookie was decorated precisely and the design was well-planned. Olivia marveled at the colors, consistency and smells – her tactile bent was her guide.
I love that I know this about my kids. I adore Joel’s deliberate thinking. I marvel at his need for order. Just as Joel needs structure, Olivia thrives on whimsey and chaos. These opposing qualities drive me mad – more often than I want to admit – especially when blooming in young children who struggle in balancing these extremes. However, these are the very traits that grow my heart toward them. They are the things that help me know them, help me mother them, and help me express my love to them in ways they “get”…

that really is a very well-proportioned cookie! I am a terrible cookie decorator. I never do sugar cookies because all of mine look like Olivia\’s.
