I had to answer truthfully, “No, honey. Just because you turn 5 tomorrow doesn’t mean you will be taller.” And because you have an answer or commentary for EVERYTHING and because you will not let no one put they thumb on yo back… you replied, “But I FEEL taller.”

Of course you do. That is the joy of 4 going on 5. You get to FEEL it all. You get to express it all. You get *squeeeeee* and whine and giggle and cry without one bit of concern for how cool you look. What your heart feels, you have the privilege of expressing for all the world to hear and see.

And you do. Mercy on all the earth… You. Do.

All year long I have been watching you grow into, and now out of the fullness of being four. Your vocabulary has changed. Your pants have become capris. You pointed out yesterday that your chin is above the kitchen counter.

Big stuff is happening. Big.

Your sentences are more complex… your observances more defined. As are your questions. I love not only watching you grow, but also listening to you grow.

My Lucy. My surprise baby. You are the last to give me notable motherhood moments… the last I nursed, the last diaper change, the last butt thermometer experience (yeah, we’re all glad that’s over!), the last stroller push, the last one I laid in a crib, and one day – far sooner than later now… the last to hold tight on my hip.

I rejoice in your growth, but long for some of those moments I will never have back.

But keep growing, baby. Keep growing.

Your job is to grow. I will do my best to not get in the way. But, rest assured, I will remind you who your mother is if you think you want to grow too far away from me. That’s my job ;)

Lucy, you have a spark… an enviable spark I pray stays at full intensity your entire life. I pray the fighting spirit I see in you now will endure – to keep that spark lit. Life has a way of slowly snuffing out joy and innocence and “spark”. My prayer for you is that the dynamic little girl I see in you today… will become the dynamic woman I know is forming. I pray for your protection – physically, emotionally, spiritually, creatively… When I watch and listen to you play, I am astounded by your creativity. Your passion. I long for you to live freely… to have full access and engagement with the wonder you see all around. I pray. I pray. I pray…

My gosh, little girl… I love you. You give me SUCH joy. Thank you. Thank you for being my reminder to soak up life. Thank you for adding laughter and perspective and stories. Girl. You have given me some stories. I thank you in advance for letting me publish many of them in the interwebz. I’m sure we’ll be discussing this over coffee someday…

Here’s a cowmonkey on a bullcowdog…

Why a monkey cowboy on a bullcowdog? Because my friend Stacey sent me links to images of Darren Sproles (look him up, I’m tired), and in that email she added a link to this picture. Who does that? STACEY DOES. And I nearly shot sparkling water outta my nose and I just wanted to share the laughter

Strollers. I won an Easy Walker Sky Stroller from MamaBargains.com - for submitting a Wishy Wishy post to Today’s Mama after being tagged by Jyl of Mom It Forward.

I won. I won! I WON! I won many things… one being a fabulous stroller!

But I don’t have a baby to stroll. My baby turns 5 on Saturday. *sigh* Bitter sweet…

After much debate with my soul and wallet… I decided NOT to Craigslist my brand-spanking new… high-end, RED, Dutch design stroller with a wicked-sharp turning ratio. Instead I decided to donate it to my kids’ school… to the annual auction. The one I shared about in this post here…

The auction is tonight, and I — being fool sucker fantastic, dynamic person that I am, I said “YES” to the role of announcer of the live auction portion. *Hello!!! Microphone! Fame! A chance to embarrass myself in the presence of many!*

The way I see it is like this – basically, were the auction a bull fight… the auctioneer would be the matador, the audience the bull, and ME…. ??? I would the cape. A glittery, fabulous cape.

I have no idea.

A microphone. Aaaaaaand a Keynote presentation to pimp out the live auction items.

I tell you all this to tell you my stroller made the live auction portion. This means I had to integrate it into my Keynote slideshow. My dilemma?

How do I make a stroller exciting and/or funny?

And late… late… LATE last night it came to me. Partially spurred on by the picture Stacey sent to me of the cowmonkey… and partially spurred on by my gig over at Babies Making Faces (formerly My First Fail)… peppered with a bit of extreme exhaustion… A video about what kind of stroller an Easy Walker Sky Stroller is NOT was birthed.

My friend Kearsie of Sounds Like Tomatoes and author of the always riveting Adventures with Edward totally tagged me. I figured it’d be good to jump in on the whole “happy” gig. Plus, it involves a list about Me, so how could I pass up an opportunity to write about Me and My happiness? Here’s a fine list of 10 things that make Me happy… in random order… mostly because I never have a plan, so this is pretty much free association… which always goes well in therapy… so why not here?

10 things that make me happy…

1) Awards! It just so happens, @kearsie herself recently bestowed two awards on mine fair temple:

Awards make me happy. Especially ones that are given to Me. And I am especially touched that anyone would risk life and limb and nasal passage for me, and my colloquials. From an army of Zombie Chickens to a roomful of horrible dog farts… I am loved. This is the lasting kind of love. *happiness and flowers blooming… or dying because of awful dog farts or zombie chickens…*

2) My 4 year old that will be 5 very soon. She inspires me.

3) Coffee.

Indeed. Looks like the Easter Bunny has taken a hit in this rough economy too. Luckily, SHE (funny, I always thought the Easter Bunny was a “he”) was able to score a mocha/latte/Americano.When I asked her as to why she was chillin’ in a trash can the Easter Bunny had no comment. Snob.

I should cut her some slack. I suppose it’s hard to speak when ones mouth is actually made of stitching.

One never knows what one will get when walking the rough streets of Seattle on a sunny Saturday afternoon in March. And the popular Pioneer Square neighborhood? Obviously a favorite go-to place for our local Easter Bunny.

I will only share the ones that won’t make you gag (well… ). The interwebzzies searchers can be a disturbing bunch.

This is not her birthday letter. I still have one more week before my baby turns 5 *gripping chest*.

As hard as it has been to to been the mother of  a baby, toddler and/or a preschooler over the past (nearly) 11 years… I am waving a reluctant goodbye. Lucy was born when Joel was 5 and Olivia was 2 (almost 3)…

The pregnancy of my sweet and spicy Lucy came as a great surprise. And as I sit here thinking back to the morning I peed on that damn stick… I can’t believe the twists and turns life has taken our family… all because of this one little girl.

And here I sit. With one week left of “4″. I am done having babies. I am sure I am fine with that… yet I feel pangs of sadness as I slowly wave goodbye to my identity as a mother of a preschooler. What day will be the last day I will carry her on my hip? When I set her down… will I know that was our last?

Can you hear me sobbing?

I don’t want more babies, yet I am just not quite ready to move on.

It is a bit of a crisis for me. Getting out of such a dependent stage of parenting is something I have longed for. So why am mourning? I have dreamed of our mutual independence since my first days of having children… The long, sleepless days & nights that I realized… “Being a mom of babies/preschoolers is stinkin’ HARD WORK!” The dependence, the diaper bags, the bottles, the diapers and wipes and Cherrios and Zwieback crackers and sippy cups and car seats… poop, shots, spit-up, tantrums… sweet smelling bald baby heads, soft toes… the warm tiny body that melts into your chest… heart to beating heart… I’m a mess! I totally blame my kids!!!

One night last week, my son Joel (edging in on 11) thought our dog (Kevin) had a nightmare. Joel decided to sleep on the floor by Kevin to comfort him. My sensitive boy. The boy who argued to have a puppy instead of a grown dog because he wanted to have something to snuggle…

When Lucy heard that Kevin had a nightmare, she hurried to his side and snuggled him and pet him and cooed over him, “Poor Kevin. Are you alright??? Poor Kevin…” Then she shouted downstairs to her brother,

I LOVE YOU JOEL! JOOOOOOEL!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

The only time Lucy has said “I love you” has been in return. I was surprised at her oozing over her big brother. I asked, “Lucy? Why did you just tell Joel you love him?”

Because he took care of Kevin!

Her eyes beamed. She was clearly moved by her brother’s act of compassion.

It’s so exciting to watch one’s kids grow… assuming they are growing in a good direction *nervous laughter*. The level of delight in my life has increased immeasurably because of the surprise I discovered growing within me in July of 2004. It has not been an easy road, but it is a road I would travel forever because of my Lucy.

Lucy means “Light”, and she has lived up to her name. The upcoming week is going to be exhaustingly busy, but it is my intent to engage my girl in her last days of being 4. I am convinced being 4 is one of the most spectacular years of life… and though she may not remember it, I want her to embrace the fullness of being 4. The early days of being 5 won’t be any different, but there will come a day… in year 5… that she will be — bigger, older. She has already stopped talking about “Toofy” her imaginary friend. She has given up saying “polka bots”. And I recently learned she kissed a boy at preschool. She really likes him, and she wants to marry him. And she wants 12 kids – 6 boys and 6 girls.

Oy. See?

Am I crazy? Has anyone else gone through this?

One day (Wednesday), I ventured to the gym. I am rather committed to the pursuit of fitness… for the next 8 days.

It’s important to have a plan. You see, I am going to be the MC for my kids’ school auction next Friday and since the school auction is going to be all about me, I plan on wearing lots of glitter and a fabulous dress. A fabulous dress – I would like to wear – as opposed to having IT wear ME. Thus, pumping iron and whathaveyou.

Also, I will be overdressed, but word on the street is the Auctioneer is wearing a tux and I simple CANNOT have him outshine me.

You wanna se my dress? This is the dress. Hold onto your hats.

It’s a bit too short if you ask me. *chubby legs*… But that’s where the gym, the tanning booth and glitter come in. Camouflage people. It’s all about smoke and mirrors. A bit of tanning is the smoke and the glitter is mah mirrors. But don’t tell anyone. I don’t want my audience to know anything *shhhhh*. This is my secret for YOU, the interwebz.

I am still debating whether to wear a feather boa and a crown. I am fairly certain I want to make sure I not only have a microphone, but also a fan. I think the windblown look gives a certain *KAPOW* See below…

Aaanywho. Me. Aerobics instructor… Not. Mostly because just as I cannot sing and play the tambourine, nor can I aerobe and speak, let alone instruct. I’d rather do laundry. Or math.

When I first started my workout Wednesday afternoon, I had a woman compliment my effort, “Wow. Nice job. Those are hard!” I burst out laughing. I had been working VERY hard to keep from sucking face with the Bosu ball…

Then I moved to my next Bosu (spelled U-SOB backwards, btw) feat. I don’t even know what this exercise is called. I call it — The Bouncy Bouncy Hey Look I’m A Human Helicopter And MAY Break AN Ankle or May Break The Nose of An Innocent Bystander move. Basically, one waves one’s arms about as one bounces and flies, stumbles and trips over the Bosu.

Then you go back the other way and do that 12 times. Twice. And believe-you-me. There is NO WAY to stay under the radar with this move. Enter, co-worker-outer:

“Huh?” *I remove earbuds*

“Are you an aerobics instructor here?”

I snorted. Gawlly. How hawt is the snorting? I am a magnet. “Uh. Who? Wha? Huh? Ha? Where?” *looks behind, over and around self* “Who? Me?!”

“Yeah. Are you an aerobics instructor here?”

“Oh gollyheckalmightyonalltheearthNO. I can’t talk and do all that. Oh heavens no. No. No.” I stopped there tho. I decided against showing my stretchmarks and…

“My name is *insert man-name here*.”

“Oh. I’m not an aerobics instructor Heather Locklear exhausted a blogger SOLID Jenny.”

“You just look like you teach aerobics.”

“Thank you? Thank you.”

And when I got home I told my husband… “Hey baby. Someone asked me if I was an aerobics instructor. Pretty awesome, huh… You’re so lucky….”

He said, “So, I guess you didn’t show your stretch marks?”

I’m totally going back.

You are perplexed, no? Perplex no more… The Mom Squad is just your average awesome moms doing regular awesome things in typical awesome ways andwhathaveyou.

Last year, I started writing Mom On The Spot… a reader blog with the Kitsap Sun. I soon realized Mom On The Spot was not the home I had dreamed of making it. As I processed my “dreams” and my limitations I kept coming back to the fact that I didn’t want to do this alone.

Hithertheretofore…. The Mom Squad. 5 local gals, each of us connected by Kevin Bacon to some degree. Our common bonds – motherhood and blogging. Each has a unique voice. Each in a different season of motherhood. Each funny, loving, uniquely dynamic, uniquely creative, and postively gorgeous. You can tell by the picture, huh.

*Pssst* Want to know a secret? The gals in that pic are not the Mom Squad hotties. It’s a pic of me with 4 other friends, but I’m creative and knew no one would know. Except now you do. But we are taking “official” Squad pics soon, so this shot is only the “stand-in” until we can all get together and capture our combined fabulous on film. *flips hair*

If I look at the big picture of my life, I see pockets of freedom and pockets of shyness. Even in adulthood. Were I a scientist, I might hypothesize that the periods of freedom had a direct correlation to the people I chose to let into my life.

During my perceived “shy” periods, I think I was fearful. I was insecure. I lacked confidence — in who I was or wanted to be. Or my weight held me back. I wavered in my own convictions based on who was around. Acceptance, popularity, inclusion… Familiar much? I think I sought out the wrong people.

But I’m older now. I never thought growing older could be a good thing…

As I have struggled and {to be honest} still struggle with desiring acceptance… life and experience has aged me and I have changed. I have become less guarded, more open, a bit louder, a bit sillier, warmer… free-er… and as a result a bit creative-ier :) My creativity has been given freedom to blossom and in that – I have been given the freedom to live life more fully.

It’s hard though… being able to embrace the freedom I am finding in being be the person I believe God created me to be.  I am self-reflective to a fault. If there is something good about me, I can make that a bad trait. So I search inside looking for faults to work on, not realizing I have been building walls, not actually fixing anything. I have spent years building very thick and high walls that have kept me from being:

• one who laughs easily
• one who welcomes warmly
• one who hugs freely
• one who hurts deeply
• one who gets wounded easily
• one who forgives freely
• one who never really had ONE best friend, but is blessed with a bright collage of friendships that create a beautiful life picture.

God created me to be free. To be Jenny. Over the years I let my own judgments about me, and my own perceived judgments from others smoosh the freedom and joy in life that I believe God intended for me.

I don’t think I am unique in this self-”smooshing”.

I don’t think I was ever a shy little girl. I was scared. Of life. Of people. Of contrary opinion. Wanting to be accepted. I thought acceptance meant shaping my life to the expectations of others. As a result, I hid so I wouldn’t draw attention and attract unfavorable judgment.

Today, I DO care what others think… but more often from people I admire, regard and respect. People who encourage, support, giggle, and get their crazies out with me. We laugh unhindered and weep openly. We dance madly and fearlessly…

I continue to learn – to strive to live to the fullest — because I have a safe place to do it. A healthy place to bloom. There were times I tried to fit the round girl that I am into a square hole. Take that as you will. But, by that I mean, not all people are the right people for me. Most are… *wink* but not all. I have lost good time and heart on reaching out to the wrong ones.

I thought I wanted to be “cool”. Ahhh, but I have a warm heart that lives on my sleeve. I will never, ever be “cool”. AndIamOKwiththat. Finally.

Bravery begets bravery. Surrounding oneself with quality people… warm people… those who are strong in character, gracious in spirit, and joyful in diversity… the gentle and kind-spirited… The ones who dare tell me I’ve gone too far, but will walk with me still. With them I can fail and still be lifted back to standing.

It is in this environment I thrive… In THIS environment I begin to finally live my life to the fullest. Watching the bravery and courage of my friends… watching their sacrificial love… receiving their empathy… advice… having their shoulder or ear… watching them love teaches me how to love.

And dancing… with the freedom of a child, but with better gross motor skillz…

My walls are not all torn down. I know not everyone will like me. I cannot predict who that will be. I still fear. I just have a better perspective.

So… if you come across a 37 year old woman with pink streaks in her hair… and she’s a little loud, and a little silly… it’s either because she is living freely… or she is scared. For as much as I have learned, and as much as I believe I am free… I find a thick security blanket of silliness proves to be a great way to hide. Hey, I’m human.

As I often say… I’m not perfect. Just awesome. I just have awesome friends.

And really, what happened Sunday morning was probably more adorable and ushy-gushy precious than funny. Maybe. Naw. It was funny. 4 year olds have that effect on life…

Look at the picture. Do you see that little rainbow doo-bob spinny thing in my daughter’s hair? She found it Sunday morning. And she was ever-so deeeeelighted to have found her long-lost, and apparently beloved rainbow hair doo-bob. For when she found it she gasped and exclaimed,

I FOUND MY FING MAMA!!!!

MAMA! I JUST KISSED IT!

Oh and did she ever. I heard that *swak*.

Here’s the thing. I get it. I am also an emotional kisser. I too have kissed my beloveds…

After Lucy looked over her lost love… she asked,

MAMA!?

*I love that she calls me Mama, and I love that she speaks in all caps…

IS THIS TWISTY HAIR FING MADE OUT OF RAINBOW LICORICE??!!!

Oh how I long to think like a four year old! Like, how much fun is that?

As we all take on a new week… may you find your own rainbow licorice… be it the gift of 5 extra minutes, be it pre-shredded cheese, be it a chilled mug for your root beer… Delight in the small, but wonderful surprises that are hiding in your Monday.
