Marathon Training Update: The 20 Miler
Just a little update for those who are interested… I hit my peak-distance training run yesterday. 20 miles. And it actually went well…
If you don’t consider:
- My left ankle (then moved up to my lower-calf) experienced sometimes sharp, but mostly dull pain the last 10 miles. That’s all.
- I have gained 8 pounds in the last month. So. I was carrying around 8 extra pounds for about 20 miles yesterday.
- Despite my best efforts to fuel well (but not over-fuel because no one wants to run on a full belly)… My stomach started growling around mile 16 and by mile 18.5 I started getting that “weak-body & shaky-limb” thing I get when my blood sugar gets too low. #notfun
Other than that:
- We (Katie and I) finished in 3 hours and 29 minutes. Which is about a 10:30 mile average. Not gonna qualify for the Boston at that rate, and not gonna break the top ten in our age-grouping, but had my ankle/calf not tanked, we might have stayed under 10. Our last half-marathon (13.1 miles) we finished with a 9:04 mile average.
- It rained very little and stayed at a nice temp – around 47*
- I got to hang out with Katie for 3 and a half hours. Yes, we talk most of the time.
- I drank 21 ounces of water and “ate” 3 packs of Gu: at 5, 10 and 15 miles.
- I am a pill pusher – electrolytes rock. I took 6 electrolyte pills. I probably should have taken 2 more. Since I’ve started taking these, my post-run stomach aches have almost become extinct. There was a point where my stomach aches would wipe out a day or even two. Now I may battle tummy ickies for an hour or two.
- I drank a whole lot of chocolate milk after my run!
- I got to have a margarita last night – Arriba!
- I bought this, but haven’t eaten it yet…

(Actually. I bought 2.)
Katie took a picture of me at mile 19.5… My hair. It’s not as rat’s-nesty as I can get… My friend Lisa says I have “racing stripes”. I like that. Makes me feel all “NASCAR”…

Today I “rest”. My friend Ricardo and his lovely wife Amanda and their fantabulous children arrived last night! We are going to take on Seattle today. I will probably be sporting a very attractive limp. I wish I could wear a shirt that reads: “I’m limping because I ran 20 miles yesterday, so gimme a break and gimme chocolate.” But I can’t. That would be vein vain. Also, I don’t have a shirt that says that, so…
Did I mention I am HUNGRY-ALL-THE-FRICKIN-OUT-OF-MY EVER-LOVING-MIND-TIME!!!? Ladies who have been pregnant: THAT kind of hungry. I. Know. All I can think about is food. If I was fuzzy and blue and ate only cookies from a cookie jar, I could possibly be mistaken for the Cookie Monster. HUN to-the GRY.
AndIwonderwhyIhavegained8pounds.
You know what I am craving? Casseroles. Meat. Hearty “man food”. It’s 7 in the morning and I want a casserole for breakfast. A whole 9×13 all to myself. I’m so hungry, I can’t even come up with a proper conclusion. At least you can’t hear my tummy growling. My tummy growls more than I speak lately. And that’s sayin’ sumthin’.
*limps away*

your hair looks awesome!
Sorry, I shoulda warned you ’bout hunger and marathon training. I found that part to be exhausting, the constant hunger. I was surprised I didn’t lose a lot of weight when I did the marathon training, but that year I was the slimmest I have been in a while. That 8 pounds is Muscle, right?
Congrats on getting through the worst week and take care of that ankle
You need a Wonder Woman shirt. And gold wrist cuffs. And an invisible jet. Cause that’s how awesome you are.
You need to tell me who did your hair. Hubby’s birthday is coming up and I want to surprise him with some purple hair! He loves purple.
You are an inspiration to me…almost. I so get bored running, even though I loved cross-country in high school and college. These days I am much better at golf-cart polo and wine marathons. I am sure it has to do with the 8 knee surgeries.
BTW. I SO LOVED your video and the song, which, thanks to you, is stuck on repeat on the juke box in my head.
I wish you all the best with your continued running ~ I will happily donate money to charity for every marthon, 1/2 marathon, etc. you run.
Your racing stripes = cool
Chubby Hubby = awesome
20 miles? = either you are cah-razy or dedicated
Also, could you let me know where you bought the snot gloves? I think Whirling Dervish needs a pair. Wonder if I can get a tax write off on those?! LOL
You are plain amazing. That is all I can say. A-MAZ-ING.
Girlfriend, you rock and I didn’t see a limp on ya at church this morning! I am finding running alot-is cutting into my job around the nhouse (laundry is taking over) how do you combat that? I am thinking I may need to drop my mileage down so I have more time. I need help, suggestions and preferrably solutions on household stuff! Maybe I need to quit working so I can run and stay on top of the house! Arg-it’s stressin me out! I am waiting expectantly for your next music video to come out!
dude you rock. I’ve never run 20 miles but every time I start puttin on serious miles toward a half, I feel like I’m going to die if I don’t have a horse for lunch. With some lucky charms or fruity pebbles I crave the sugar cereals during training. Lately I’ve been eating yogurt with granola before runs- it coats your tummy and it has some ingredient that kicks in about an hour into the run..love it. Plus it sounds healthy…I like to promote healthyness….no matter how deluded I really am.
When marathon trining with a team, we used to go for brunch after our big-milerat this place called the bookstore cafe. I always ordered the wadmalaw casserole with a side of cranbery-orange bread. Thin sliced potatoes sauteed as the base & then shredded or finely sliced veggies (onion, pepper, zuchini, yellow squash, etc…)& cheese on top baked as a casserole. Add scrambled egg or sunny-side ups on top!! Man-food for breakfast in a socially acceptable way (add bacon or sausage for you carnivores). Enjoy!!
