Can I tell ya’ll somethin’?

I am officially nervous. My heart is beating a bit fast, my hands are shaking, and my chest feels a little twisty.

I am getting my gear together for Sunday. Sunday? What’s so big about Sunday? Nuthin’, really… except the biggest challenge of my life - gah! OK, with the exception of the epidural “incident” during the birth of my first child, but you don’t want me to go there… back labor… it was ugly.

Sunday I am taking on my longest triathlon distance (an Olympic distance - a .92 mile swim, 24 mile bike and 6 mile death march run). I have done 5 sprint triathlons since 2001. Started doing them for baby-weight losing goals. The sprint distance is great, but I thought it was time to stretch myself, and today is the day I need to get my gear together.

As I debated which race number strap to wear, MEN came to my mind. Triathlon-y men! Competetive, prolly-gonna-be-knocked-out-by-a-MAN-elbow-during-the-swim-kinda-MEN! This is my first coed tri! What was I thinking? I’m gonna get pounded… or at least dunked like a poor little, sweet rubber ducky during toddler bath time. The horror!

Me and Lance Armstrong - Same!

O.K., MAYBE that is a slight exaggeration.

  1. I am a woman and he is a man.
  2. He has prolly no body fat and I have… do.

BUT, for  a brief moment (approximately 10-20 seconds) I was Just. Like. Lance. Armstrong. You see, it is rumored he races at 95% of his maximum heart-rate. And for 10-20 seconds, I raced at 95% of mine! BFF, Lance!

On Saturday my sister and I ran in a local 4 mile race. Picture. Picture. We were so race-ready, on the heels of disco-ing away Friday night at a local casino. We danced from 9 to 1:30 - and only took breaks when the band did. And might I mention it is imperative that one maintains adequate hydration when one is disco-ing like a fool the night before a race.. and only gets 5.5 hours of sleep.

My sister - a picture of health.

Wanna know what my sister said as she was shoving the last piece of cinnamon roll in her mouth??? Read this with a Valley Girl accent:

Pizza! I don’t eat peeeeetzzaaaaa!

But she does eat cinnamon rolls. She is so healthy. I love her.

She’s carbo-loading for our 4 mile road race tomorrow morning.

Go Karri!!!

11 days

So.

I am training for my first Olympic distance triathlon. It is in 11 days. I got back from Blogher ‘08 3 days ago. Another name I have given BloHer ‘08 is “Calorie Fest-O-Rama” .

While I was there I met 2 triathloners - Kathleen of Forging Ahead and Catherine (yes I need her URL so I can send some linky-love!)… Kathleen has her first tri coming up very soon! Go Kathleen!!! I was blessed to have met her the first morning and we got to spend lots of pieces of time throughout the weeknd getting to know each other, talking “shop” - tri shop :) I met Catherine the last night, and learned she did her first tri last summer. I did the same one - the Seattle Danskin! We have a special connection I will need to share in a whole other post. It’s remarkable.

I usually try to train 5 to 6 days a week. During BlogHer week I got in 3 days of semi-decent training. I will not tell you the horrible tales of my consumption while away. Suffice it to say I came home to an extra 5 pounds. Blech. But, the happiest-gained 5 pounds I’ve ever met.

But now I am trying to get back on track - since there are only 11 days left on the track! On Monday I rode 14 miles and ran 3.5. On Tuesday I ran 4 miles and took 2 naps for all the exhaustion that overwhelmed me. Today I swam 1 mile and ran 3.5 miles… then walked around Seattle All. Day. Tomorrow…. I dunno. My butt hurts! I am totally serious!

I am thinking Dara Torres never acted like I did 2 weeks before her races, but then again - I don’t have 2 stretchers nor hopes of ever having abs like hers. I do have ab muscles (I can feel them!), only they just are well-insulated… my own special bubble-wrap, if you will. And if you really think about it - what makes people more happy - rock-hard abs or bubble wrap?

Never mind.

Never mind.

First off, yeah. It’s Dara Torres, not Dana Torres. My bad.

To refresh your memory, she is the 41 year-old superwoman of all swimmingness… who won a spot on this year’s U.S. Olympic Team to become the oldest woman to ever swim in the Olympics. Sha. Zam.

Anywho. In this post, I wrote her name as “Dana” because the article I linked to in that post gave her that name too. In the spirit of journalistic integrity, I feel I should correct my error. It’s Dara.

Dara. Dara. Dara. *** not unlike Jan Brady’s jealous whine, “Marsha. Marsha. Marsha.”***

My good friend Julie Leung sent me a link to an article in the NY Times about Dara Torres.

***crickets chirping***

***stunned***

***eye twitching***

Did you that picture?

The woman is a machine. And she has a staff that helps keep her primed. And she is 6 feet tall…

Torres’s retinue includes a head coach, a sprint coach, a strength coach, two stretchers, two masseuses, a chiropractor and a nanny, at the cost of at least $100,000 per year.

I have written a poem:

Why I Will Never Rock the Water Nor be an Olympian Like Dara…

I don’t have a head coach.

Nor a coach for sprinting.

Nor even a coach made of a pumpkin.

Neither like Dara, nor Cinderella am I.

No strength coach…

no stretcher-people neither.

Masseuse?

Schmasseuse!

2 Masseuses?

Double Schmasseuses!

I have no nanny.

I haven’t seen my chiropractor

since December.

$$$,$$$

No. Words.

I. Eat. Sugar.

Go. Dara. Go.

The end.

Bikey Bikerson

No. That is not the name I have chosen for my shiny road bike. Here’s a picture of her again. I love looking at her so much…

So, in my search for name ideas, summa ya’ll had a few ideas, and a few opinions. Thank you so very much for caring enough to send the very best ideas. Thank you for your creativity and taking an active interest in my mania. Let’s take a look at what we got:

Confession - Olympic Dreams

I have admitted this to friends, but to admit this in a wider forum fells kinda silly. However, ya’ll know I want to keep it real wit’cha so here goes…

I have always wanted to swim in the Olympics. As long as I can remember.

I started “competing” in my local summer swim club (not a year-round club) when I was 5… maybe 6. I kept swimming each summer until I was 18. It wasn’t until I entered the 13-14 age group that I started doing well - at least in the small community I was part of. It was during that time I began beating (finishing before, not assaulting) the girls who I had never been able to gain victory over in the 8 years before.

Happy 4th!

Hi all! Happy Fourth of July! Be safe. Be sane. Be real. Yo.

The weather looks good here today. Much better than yesterday. In fact, the clouds were so dark, and the rain so strangely heavy, it drove my 6 year-old daughter to inquire, “Mom. Was yesterday the last day of summer?” It’s nice that it appears Summer came back to us… granted, much cooler than other places, but for me - 70 degrees is perfect… perfect.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Oh my gosh, friends! I totally forgot to tell you what happened yesterday. I was at the gym, pumpin’ iron-n-such. I had a brief conversation with a gal who is clearly cooler and more important than me.

Skillz

So. Yesterday.

I am at the bike shop. Getting Mz. Thang/Butta/Fastlikedawind/Lollipop/Buffy all synced-up. We raised the handle bars and worked on my form. I still need lots of work. Apparently I am tense. Who knew? But that’s not the story.

The story is:

I was all chattin’ with a gal who was getting syced-up with her bike too.

Her nearly 60 year-old-self was all, “So what events are you doing.”

I was all, “Oh, an Olympic distance tri.”

She was all, “Oh, when I did an Olympic, I….yadda, yadda, yadda…”

And I was all, “You already did one? Awesome! What’s next?”

She was like, “I am thinking about a half.”

I was like, “A half-IRON?” I picked my jaw off the floor.

She, “Mmm-hmmm”

I think I bowed to her.

Help me name my awesome road bike!

It is with joy in my heart and more debt on the plastic that I announce to the world - I got a road bike!!!

My other bike is a mountain bike/cruiser… I added road tires to help increase the speed just a touch. My Cruiser has taken me through 5 sprint-distance triathlons - since I got bit by the tri bug 7 years ago. My big ‘ol cruiser holds a special place in my heart… *kiss, kiss*

However, it is time to move on. To slim down. To get legit. I am planning on biking further, and to haul my cruiser 24+ miles at a time - is just… medieval! I am way too “retro” for “medieval”! It took a little financial creativity, but I worked it out…

Here is my new carbon-vision of all loveliness:

Isn’t she just lovely??? I snuggle her frame, sing her a lullaby, kiss her gear shifters, and air up her adorable skinny little tires before I tucked her into bed at night. *SWOON*

I rode her 20 miles on Saturday and 12 miles this morning. I cut 7.5 minutes of my 12 mile route - all because of this new beauty in my life. I Luh. Her. So. Mauch.

But I would like some input. I have a few names I’ve been tumbling about, but I said to myself, I said, “Jenny, I bet your hot online friends would love to have a say in naming the new love of your life.” Then I said back to myself, “Yeah, Jenny! You’re right! As. Always.”

So here I am - presenting a few options. I was going to try out a poll program from Vizu, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Instead of getting all-fancy, let’s just go “old school” - comments!

Here are your choices in alphabetical order:

  • Buffy the Asphalt Slayer
  • Butter (because everything is better with butter!)
  • Mz. Thang
  • Speedy Speederson
  • _____?????_____ (if there’s something cooler and edgier - I am open!!!)
:)
