I had forgotten about that mix until recently and decided to whip up a batch and see what the kids thought.

Here’s the deal… healthy food is not always the yummiest food.

Case-in-point? There was that one time in my mothering career where I tried adding wheat germ to anything that seemed to “receive” wheat germ well. Cleverly *ahem* I added it to oatmeal and sprinkled it about like I was some kind-of wheat germ fairy.

My takeaway: Fairies were meant to sprinkle glitter. Not wheat germ.

My inner voice said, “Jenny. There’s an easier way… One word: TURKEY.” And when Inner Me speaks, I listen…

Will Cook For Compliments: A Vlog is a post from: Jenny On the Spot * This is what I do...

I have kids and stuff, and I see cool things on the interwebz (like these rainbow gelatin orange wedges) and think, “My kids would dig that!”

Then I further think, “My kids would love me more and tell all people to the ends of the earth of my awesome if I did this kind-of ‘uber-engaged mom’ sort-of thing.”

Then I don’t do it.

But then I see people like my friend Shauna (yes, I wrote “my friend” and will continue to do so until she files for a restraining order… or a cease and desist thing-a-ma-bob… but I doubt she will because she’s pretty busy making her own jello wedgies… um…)

Where was I going with this?

OH. Then I saw that MY FRIEND SHAUNA (you read that right…) made them… and I was all – GAME. ON.

See?

It’s like a rainbow of orange wedges. Like literally-ish. With the exception it’s a full circle and there are fewer colors. And stuff.

So. One would think this little project would be easy.

Funny how theories work.

And ’tis why I am no theorylogian.

Heh.

Aaanywho… Here’s how ya do it… You take oranges and cut them in half and empty their innards:

Which sounds pretty straighforward, but… It was labor intensive, especailly for a girl like me who only has one of those glass hand juicer thingies. And is slightly literal and exact when it comes to copying following a recipe.

I knew I had perhaps taken it a tad too far when I found myself hunkered over the trash can with my orange-halves and scissors… in order to trim the orange hairs/pulp things from the edges.

I trimmed my oranges.

Who has time for that???

P.S. Citrus stings. Owie.

So. Then you take your trimmed orange halves *eyes go wild* and place the halves in a muffin tin…. Carefully pour jello into the halves. I used 3 colors because I couldn’t bear to make a 4th, (green). But it was fine because the blue jello in the orange cup kinda looked green, so really it was fine. And I am not the least obsessive.

Happy girl is happy with orange (but blue, but kinda-green) jello wedge…

Go ahead, kiddo… have more – oranges are good for you!

Taste the rainbow, baby…

I don’t know how the others got theirs so trimmed and clear-looking. But regardless, these are still pretty cool…

P.S. What did we do with all that fresh orange juice?

We made frozen orange juice cubes. But I have no pictures. You’ll have to trust me…. Do you trust me?

Rainbow gelatin orange wedges: A.K.A. jello, oranges and obsessive trimming is a post from: Jenny On the Spot * This is what I do...

Let’s just say that I am no spring chicken, nor have I ever been to the principal’s office (well… not because of ME), nor have I ever been to a kind-of party where The Law has been summoned.

UNTIL this weekend.

It all started innocently enough. My friend. Her 40th. Black-bottom cupcakes. Cute decorations.

Margaritas. Beer… Basic party-hydration needs were met.

A DJ… who loved me who took requests…

Firemen!

I’d say probably half a department’s worth of firemen, medics, etc… were at this party, ladies.

I know. You’re hyperventilating and thinking, “I WANT HER LIFE.”

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!!!

There was chalk!

A microphone… on which I may or may not, but MAY have sung Ice Ice Baby… And Eminem’s Lose Yourself… because I was a white rapper guy in my past life, I just know it…

There was adequate signeage that made me snortle like an 8th grade boy…

There was a grill the size of an Old Testament altar!!!

We were safe though, because… in case I forgot to mention – FIREMEN.

Aaaaaaaaanywho.

THERE WAS A GLUTEN, DAIRY, EGG AND SOY-FREE SECTION!!! This party was thah shizzle! Ain’t nobody havin’ no allergic reactions at this party, yo!!!

One thing lead to another and before we knew it… the clock struck 11 and the popo stood at the door of the barn/shop on account of the very loud Vanilla Ice, Guns & Roses, Lady Gaga, and whohavesyou…

The Lawman: If I have to come back, I’ll have to fine you $250.

One of the firemen attendees queried: What if we just pay you now, then you won’t have to come back?

I like these people. These are good people.

Fear not, law abiding citizens… we turned down the noise and kept our money… But what’s a party to do when the volume goes from an 11 to, say a 6 or a 7?

It was time to deal with leftover slices of cheese from the deli-try, yo!

And my husband was there too, lest you cast judgement on my judgement as a married woman…

He even earned HIS very own cheese welt. But THAT picture is just for us.

P.S. This wasn’t my birthday party {HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARA!!!!}… but I wish it was. I mean, really… c’mon who get’s to have a party like that?

Lucy was snacking on an apple and she squeals, “MOM! It’s an apple!”

I was all, “Yep. You went to get an apple and you got an apple.” In my mind I was thinking, “Dear mercy, we should have named her Princess Obvious.”

Then I looked, and she was right – with her tiny teeth she managed to bite the apple *just so*… We are an Apple family… So. Of course.

And that is what I did on summer vacation.

Apple apple? is a post from: Jenny On the Spot * This is what I do...

Actually, I am fairly certain I did not have you at “lettuce”, but “Lettuce Wraps” as a title leaves me wanting, so I threw that extra part in there.

You’re welcome.

But I did make Lettuce Wraps for dinner. TURKEY Lettuce Wraps.

That’s right…. TURKEY.

*bom chicka wow WOW*

I came across a recipe for Pork Lettuce Wraps here. I was all, “Oh… Yes please…”

But I made some modifications. Like using TURKEY instead of PORK.

I also couldn’t find Thai chili garlic paste… So I used chili garlic sauce. And rice wine vinegar? I just used rice vinegar.

Badda Boom, Badda Bing!

Here’s THE BEST PART of this whole dinner… the kids LOVED it.

LU-HUVVVED.

Now they want Turkey Lettuce Wrap Mondays.

Um… I don’t even know my spawn anymore. And also, COOLEST KIDS EVER!

I also served corn on the cob because I wasn’t sure the kids would like the meat mix… and knew that at the very least they’d eat a lion’s share of corn on the cob. Hitherhencetofore – not starving… but miracle of all miracles — I am the Turkey Lettuce Wrap hero y’all!!!

Unrelated: Has anyone ever used lettuce leaves as a cape?

What?

Veggies: I have had a WICKED hankerin’ for asparagus, oh…. FOR A YEAR, I don’t know… Who craves asparagus???

Me, apparently. I freak me out a lot little.

So when I saw those green guys at the store you better believe I snatched up a bundle. And then the yellow zucchini guys were laying in the bin next to the asparagus… looking all edible and complimentary to the asparagus, so I snatched a couple of those fellas…

When I got home I snapped the ends off the asparagus, sliced up the yellow zucchini, threw the broiler on high, tossed the greens and yellows in some olive oil & salt & pepper… and voila!

But the kids didn’t eat those. They ate corn. Aaaaaand TURKEY LETTUCE WRAPS.

And watermelon. YAY for watermelon!!! *smells summer appraoching* A little sweet for the tooth, and a little color on the plate.

Lettuce Wraps: I had you at “lettuce”… is a post from: Jenny On the Spot * This is what I do...

But first, may I make a little confession?

With all the video I do (which has been less than more lately)… I have a really hard time watching myself in video.

When editing and whathaveyou, I can watch me. But when it is all said and done. *hides eyes*

And then there are the times I have no editing control. That is the hardest for me.

I really like to have control. But this post is about cookies.

And I have NO control when it comes to cookies, yo.

With all that said, I was tickled to have been invited to be part of an Allrecipes.com Cookies Across America holiday baking webcast last December. I was brought in to be a part of making Melting Snowman cookies:

The run-down:

I had my own wireless mic.
Did you know wireless body mics still have wires?
FYI.
They gave me coffee.
And my very first “live broadcast” experience.
I unintentionally flung my cookie off it’s plate.
I broke a snowman’s “arm”.
But he didn’t cry.
My sweater was a ‘lil snug, but I knew I’d get to wear an apron, so… yay me!
I sure do like having my own mic.
But I’ve known this for awhile now.

They had all our stuff prepared. May I just say my favorite way of making cookies is when someone has made the cookie, the frosting and gathered the decorations! Allz I had to do was decorate. Oh, and that whole “live webcast” thing was happening too.

Look at those hard-working technical people doing their technical things!

I’ve not done one of these in awhile! I am on the heels of a busy, busy week… heading into a busy weekend… which has me scurrying like a wild (albeit, happy) animal to get ready to leave for Blissdom on Tuesday.

Speaking of happy… I am just gonna share with you some online spaces I just enjoy. I don’t get much online recreational time, but when I do… you might find me in one of these spaces… Except for #1. That’s just a color I have been in LOVE with lately, and want to paint all my furniture hues of this blue. It makes me happy….

1. I want to look at this color all day long.
2. Pinterest. It’s like a vision board only not so-much a vision as much as a lust-list. LOVE this site. LOVE.
3. Polyvore. @brassydel sent me a tweet about this site recently. It’s like paper dolls, but awesome.
4. Whatever. No, I am not sassing you. Whatever… Meg’s site is a favey favey fave. I love her use of color. I love her perspective… and her heart. When I think of Meg, I think of that blue color up there.

So. If you have some online recreational time… there are 3 places to get lost in. Maybe I’ll see you around the “neighborhood”! *wink*
