Tired of Making Lunches … Make Your Kids Do It!

School starts here tomorrow. I thought a school-related post would be appropriate. It is made possible by my dear friend Casey. Her name may sound familiar because I have mentioned her name before here and here and it is her fridge that will be featured this coming Friday!

Now. I know Casey, and she has earned a position of esteem in my life as a woman who can organize (and also dance… but that’s not the point here…)! But you may not know that about her, so I’m here to tell you… “Casey is an organizational Wizard!” That is why when she shared about her 4-drawer lunch packing system, I thot: “I want to bring this to My Public! I want the lives of My Public to be better each day, and this is something that must be shared.” And Casey, being the dependable (and organized!) friend that she is - got right on my request for pictures and information.

So. If you have kids in school, who eat lunch, here a great idea… straight from my friend Casey!

I love these drawers!!! I’ve used this system for two years. I just make the sandwich and the kids do the rest by picking one item from each drawer …

Drawers:

  • Juice boxes or milk (in fridge)
  • Fruit roll-ups/snacks/cups &/or fresh fruit (in fridge)
  • Chips/Snacks (I even do baggies of gold fish or crackers so they are individual servings - only takes a half hour or so and saves $$)
  • Treats - cookies or granola bars (This can be a reward if they do all of their morning preparation without being reminded 100x)

They also learn that they don’t get to have more than one item in their lunch… you don’t get to have an entire lunch of fruit stuff. I’ve made Mondays and Fridays “Lunchable” days - it’s a reward for all of us… I don’t even have to make the sandwich :)

Preparation:

  • One trip to Costco,
  • open box
  • pour contents in drawer
  • :)
Give kids a month to get the system down. I tell my kids that if they don’t get their stuff put in their lunch in time, that I’ll make their lunch… and that they won’t get a dessert and maybe they won’t get the chips they like so they are motivated to get to making their lunches!  I still “check” their lunches occasionally to make sure that they aren’t double-dipping (especially at the beginning of the year when the drawers are at their “prime-pickin’”).

I am going to set this system up ASAP! Last year I had 1 in school, and I just let Joel get school lunches most days. It was easier… not healthier or cheaper, but easier. Anyway. This year I have 2 kids that will need lunches AND the lunch price has gone up… and income has gone down… I don’t need Einstein to help me do the math. So… the best way for me to get my kids a lunch each day (I know, I am such a good mom) - without me turning into a stressed-out monster is to have a plan. What I love about this plan is it requires the kids to play an active part in feeding themselves… and taking responsibility. My kids love independence and this gives them that - with boundaries. A big “WOOT!” to Casey for being a proactive problem solver and making my life easier :) *wipes tear* I miss you Casey…

Fridge Friday - 08.29.08

As some of you know, we went camping last weekend. It was oodles of fun… for adults and kids alike! You may be wondering, “Why is Crazy Jenny talking about camping when this is a post about refrigerators? Refrigerators are not for camping?”

Ahhh, my friends. If this is what you were thinking, then I am here to prove you wrong. Not on the “Crazy Jenny” part, but on the “refrigerators are not for camping” part… watch…

The traditional way to keep foods cold while camping:

The BETTER way to keep cold foods cold:

The fridge above and below belongs to Tom and Kathy and family. Thank you for indulging my blogchosis as I circled your camp in order to catch a picture for my Fridge Friday post!

This next fridge belongs to Chuck and Jen. This is not the first time their fridge has “made the cut” here on Jennyonthespot! You know, cuz of all the popular that this site is and I have a loooong list of folks and fridges waiting for their 15 minutes of fame. Yeah, this site here is practically bigger than Oprah.

Speaking of “waiting list” - be sure to come back next Friday when the fridge of my lovely friend Casey…

will show off her fridge - straight from the heat of Arizona. They are a well-hydrated group…

08.08.08 - (Guest) Fridge Friday

It’s time to give a little screen time to an East Coast fridge! My friend Jen (no blog, but yes… yet another Jen) sent me an email earlier this last month (yes, Fridge friday was on an extended vacation) that read:

Jenny - I was thinking of you the other day when I came home from a trip out of town and my mom said, “I cleaned your fridge.”  It was so shiny in there I took pics…

One email led to another and shazam - my newest guest fridge! Jen and I have been friends for… my goodness - years! I think we (my hubs, my son and I) crashed her Christmas party back in ‘01. It was there I tasted my first Hot Buttered Rum. Ka-Pow! I think we crashed it because of Blozulfog. She always takes my to crash parties of her friends… and then they become my friends… Can you hear the birds singing? Sadly, Jen and her hubby moved a few (several… too many!) years ago… and have had 2 babies since!

I’m reminiscing for a moment… I remember my husband and I had a party. 10 couples came… 5 of the 10 women were named some form of Jen, Jenny or Jennifer… and 2 of the couples were “Jen and Dave”. This “Jen” was one of the “Jen & Dave” couples. Remember that Jen???

Another thing about this Jen, that endears me to her - is her appreciation for dancing and 80’s music. I mean… she has a great name, is a friend that dances, loves 80’s AND she even told me about a song called 27 Jennifers! Oh - and she’s a mommy. I love mommies…

Now, here are a few words from Jen, about her fridge:

A post in which I make fun of my pantry-keeping skills.

I decided to clean out my pantry recently. It was like a great big junk drawer of canned, boxed and bottled food. Apparently I have been stocking up on the necessities. I am such a “nester”…

Apparently, every family of 5 needs THREE 40 ounce bottles of BBQ sauce. Yeah, because my kids use BBQ sauce instead of milk in their cereal.

Chocolate syrup. Keeps the marriage alive. Just kidding. You can NEVER have enough of the syrup that is chocolate…A.K.A. “The Nectar of All Things Good and True”. I mean, really… What if a school bus full of children broke down in front of my house and I had an insufficient amount of chocolate syrup for making chocolate milk? How embarrassing.

I guess I could always offer them…

What is this all about? One might think I operate a soup kitchen… or a healing clinic called, “Bring Me Your Sick, Your Sore Throats”. Nope. I just harvested a bounty of canned chicken broth… for all the soup I make in the summer. Ahhh… nothing like sipping on steaming hot bowl of soup In. The. Summer.

Tomatoes anyone? My kids HATE tomatoes, but - by golly - I am gonna keep these diced, sauced, crushed, whole, canned, red orbs in my pantry. I wait for the moment enough of their young taste-buds die off and the children realize tomatoes won’t gag them to death.

Oooh - a vinegar bar! I look at this line up and I am reminded of Bubba Gump…

…white wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, Balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, rice vinegar, vinegar-vinegar…

***Note: One item that was NOT in my pantry…. Oreos. Because I ate them. All.

The Mid Summer Triathlon - through the eyes of Jenny.

My apologies - this will be one of those long posts. The kind-of post successful bloggers advise against. But for the sake of time and being sure to get this down, I’m going to just go for it. Is there a blog award for longest post???? If you bear with me, I promise to post a video in here somewhere in which I make a fool of myself as I demonstrate the sounds of a man I encountered during the swim who I have named, “The Blubbering Swimmer”.

In case you didn’t know - I did this:

I did it! I did It! And here’s proof I finished:

And I didn’t need one of these:

6 random things.

I’ve been tagged by Myra of We Make Three! What does “this Myra” want me to do? Well, she has asked me to do something that comes very natural to me: be random!

1. I eat meat.

2. My favorite meat is red, steaky meat slathered with gorgonzola sauce.

3. I *heart* Oreos.

4. I only like Hershey bars when dipped in Jif peanut butter. Jif. No healthy-schmealthy, non-hydrogenated, gotta-pump-weights-to-mix-the-oil kinda peanut butter. Nay. Jif. Trust me… *dangling small golden pocket watch from sparkly golden chain as I chant, “Jiffffffffffff…Jifffffffffffffffff…Jiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiffffffffffffffff…”

5. …OR Hershey bars are also tasty when served on a lovely bed of crisp, straight from the bag, graham crackers and flame-roasted marshmallow.

6. But we all know that the best compliment to the pairing of graham crackers and flame-roasted marshmallows is not, in fact, a few squares from a Hershy bar. Noooooooooooho. In fact - it is a Reese’s Peanut Butter cup. You must test my claim. You. WILL. Love. Me.

Upon review of my 6 random things, me thinks I am hungry.

Now, According to the rules Myra posted I need to:

  • Link to tagger - “Check!”.
  • Post the rules - in process of “Check!”
  • Write  6 random things about yourself- “Chizzle-check!”
  • Tag six people - ***
  • Tell those people they are tagged - ***
  • Tell yer tagger “I did it!” - one more proofread, and I’ll do it!

***I’m thinking I am going to leave this one open. If you would like to “get all random” on me, let me know you did (comment, linky love) and I will certainly come by and make fun of you :)

My sister - a picture of health.

Wanna know what my sister said as she was shoving the last piece of cinnamon roll in her mouth??? Read this with a Valley Girl accent:

Pizza! I don’t eat peeeeetzzaaaaa!

But she does eat cinnamon rolls. She is so healthy. I love her.

She’s carbo-loading for our 4 mile road race tomorrow morning.

Go Karri!!!

Make Me Laugh Monday

We went to the glorious land of all childhoodness Chuck E. NoIDon’tWannaGoPleaseDon’tMakeMeTakeYouThere Cheese for one of my kids’ birthdays. I have 3 of those little people. All 3 have birthdays. All 3! Every. Year! How am I supposed to keep track whose birthday was what…?!? Oh the judgement… I can’t breathe….

Anyway.

I took a moment to stop shoving my face full of that really awesome pizza and I spied saw this guy:

I nudged my husband, and scream-whispered, “Hey! HEY!!! Take a picture of that guy!” IIIIIIII certainly wasn’t gonna take the picture - he coulda killed me! I made Paul do my dirty work.

Hmmm… maybe the Chuck E. Cheese Corporation would like to pay me the big bucks for their new advertising campaign. Ya think?

For other Make Me Laugh Monday reads - go here!
