Is six the new 16? When did 8-year-olds start wearing glitter makeup and skimpy skirts? And why do 6-year-olds prefer Hannah Montana and High School Musical to Curious George and The Electric Company? Popular culture bombards us – and our children – with sexy images, clothing, toys, Web sites, downloadable music and TV shows that, once upon a time, would have made any 13-year-old blush. — ParentMap Lecture Series Page
Do you agree? Do you not? Please leave a comment – I am curious.
If you live in the Seattle area, perhaps you’d like to discuss this topic in person… In the company of panelists knowledgeable in this content field, and in the company of other parents.
The April 14th Pathways Lecture Series with ParentMap is titled Sexy Too Soon? Body Image, Media and Self-Esteem. I will be making the trip to be there and will join in on the conversation. But if ya just can’t make it — there is always Twitter!
There will be some fabulous co-social media mommies in da house gettin’ our Twitter on! We will be using the hashtag #sexytoosoon.
I am @jennyonthespot over there on the Twitter, but you know me. Meet the other gals who are doing their finger endurance exercises in preparation for the event:
Taraneh Guidry — Seattle Mommy (@SeattleMommy)
Giyen Kim — Bacon is My Enemy (@Giyen)
Maya Bisineer — thinkmaya (@ThinkMaya)
Leslie Flinger — Mrs. Flinger (@MrsFlinger)
Mandy Morrison — Harper’s Happenings (@teammandy)

So. Seriously. Join in on the conversation – be it via blog comment here, or on Wednesday night via Twitter!

Ooo. My husband and I are so on the same page with this one. We get forever frustrated that finding age-appropriate clothing for our daughter and all this teenager media being thrown at girls her age or younger!
The make-up thing…meh. I remember being in Kindergarden and constantly getting into my mom’s blue eyeshadow. That kinda thing has been going on with little girls since make-up was invented.
You know what I saw at Walmart the other day? Leather (looking) leggings…in little girl sizes!!!
Oh hell to the no!
