Save Our Pool!

Word on the street is: our pool will close August 31, 2008 if the community at large cannot raise the $350,000 to keep it open. The school district has had to cut the pool out of it’s budget for the coming school year. If $350,000 is raised, it will keep the pool open for 1 year. During that year, the Save Our Pool folks hope to “raise community awareness regarding pool operations while establishing community based financial support for the pool.”

I am so appreciative there are people who have the gumption and know-how to establish this kind of operation. Ya know, like I appreciate the people who have the gumption and mental ability to learn how to be doctors and scientists and computer programmers. That’s good people right thar – doctors, scientists, computer programmers and Save Our Pool citizen founders.

I have a vested interest in saving our pool. I have been a huge fan of swimming prolly my entire life. I started swimming competitively at the age of 5. I grew up in Central California, so summer swim club was my life from the summer of my 5th year of life, to my 18th year of life. Now, I was no Janet Evans, but I didn’t swim year-round either. But if I had… anywho… Have I ever told you how I idolized Janet Evans? I remember in 10th grade I had to write a paper on my hero – I wrote about her. She was “Da Shizzle” before there was “Shizzle”. Yo.

As is my common practice, I digress. The My local pool is in danger of being shut down, and I don’t like it so much. So, this is a starting effort for me – posting this in hopes that Daddy or Mommy Warbucks will be looking through blogs – because they have a stash of cash and a heart of gold – and will be inspired and sweep my swimming community off of our flippers, or kick-boards, or swim noodles…
