You missed out on a delicious chocolate malt Sunday p.m.

My great-grandmother passed away over 10 years ago. I adored my Grandma Sue. I still do, and I feel an ache in my heart because I miss her. I wrote a short post about her back in November.

My great-grandma… she rarely shared about her childhood. I tried to help her fill out a “grandma” book once, but she was so uncomfortable sharing her past. When she died, she left some clues behind. Clues that lead my imagination to wander about the life she led. She divorced back in the 30’s (I think), when divorce was most certainly not a “norm”. She was a very independent and stubborn woman who worked hard and raised a son all by herself at a time when I am sure it was a great struggle.  She was a strong, strong woman.

All Women’s Triathlon – Trek Style

Raise your hand if you’ve done a triathlon? Any length…

O.K. Good. Very good!

Now, those of you who did not raise your hands (and I am speaking to the ladies), would you consider doing one if you knew it was only for women?

I heard that snicker. Yes you….shhhh. Stop. St… Yes. You. Could!!!

When my firstborn was an infant, I went to watch my friend compete in an all-women’s triathlon. I sat underneath a tree (it was cold and raining). As I sat nursing my newborn, I watched woman after woman cross the finish line. I saw women of ALL shapes… ALL sizes… ALL ages — Cross. The. Finish. Line.

I watched a 78 year-old woman cross that finish line as I sat under that tree, nursing my son. I thought, “Uhhh. If SHE can do it, I pretty much can’t come up with any justification not to be able to do it.” For some reason, “being a mom” was not enough reason for me to let myself out of that one. That was 1999… I was 26. Continue reading ‘All Women’s Triathlon – Trek Style’

Taking “Green” To A Whole Other Level – Diapers

Bloggers have a very important role. We have a stage before us… a stage that faces the whole wide world of Interwebz. The Onlines provides us a large audience of peoples…

IRL (In Real Life) our audience is limited to those we might flip off in the car greet at the office or grocery store. However, our onlineness gives us a stronger, louder… more powerful voice. A voice that has the ability to influence… a voice of reason (shutup), a voice of change…

I am moving into a new season as a blogger. I am learning about the power of information. I am learning about the value of sharing said information. The greatest gift I can give to you is information… and information is power. Hithertofore — when I give you information… I. Give. You. Power.

My friends, here is some information… power, if you will… on “going green”… Go forth! Save the earth! Go green! Literally. This makes me feel very *ahem* green.

Did I Tell You I am Training for a Marathon?

I did? I didn’t? Either way, you know now. It’s in May. You also know I am not fully “right” in the head, but this is not new information for you. Why would I consider doing such a thing? Well, I did not come to this on my own. No. I have a friend who, like a farmer sells his cattle to the Walmart meat department… Katie leads me into things like marathons.

Now. I have run several half-marathons before. A half-marathon is 13.1 miles. BTW, that last .1 is longer and meaner than the first three miles of anything. Point one??? Who does that? Fool.

And the “He’s Just Not That Into You” Giveaway Winner Is…

Ha! You thought I’d just tell ya? Silly friends…. You know me better than that! I made a video, chock-full of importantness – all 4 minutes. Really, when you think about it, 4 minutes is not too long to announce a winner. I mean the Oscars get, like… what 2-3 hours? I think my video here is TOTALLY with in reason when it comes to length. So, without further ado – the winner:

Make Me Laugh Monday – Dirty UPS Truck

The toughest criticism is self-criticism. Zeuxis, an ancient Greek painter, stepped back from a finished canvas and saw the flaws in his work. He began laughing at himself, couldn’t stop, burst a blood vessel, and laughed himself to death.

(Excerpt taken from the book Twisted: Tales From The Wacky Side of Life by Bob Fenster - p. 86)

It must have been hard for Zeuxis. I cannot relate. “Flaws”. I don’t think I even know what that word means, let alone creating something with said “flaws”? **scratches head** It must be such a burden to not be made out of Awesome…

Speaking of flaws… nobody likes a dirty vehicle. However, I am glad the driver of this UPS truck wasn’t concerned about the layers of dirt growing on his truck… for one UPS man’s dirty truck, is another woman’s Make Me Laugh Monday post:

Ya laughing? I sure hope so:) have a fantastic Monday, my friends! If you’d like to join in, please plug your name and specific, funny blog post in the Mr. Linky below…

*Pop* Goes My Bubble

I was standing in line at the grocery store one day. I watched a mother holding her little one. I watched as she nuzzled her nose in her son’s soft, baby hair and then she just kissed, kissed, kissed that precious little head….  You can read the remainder my most recent post, “I Know That Love” at Type-A Mom

So, that post, was one of those “mushy, gushy, lovey” mommy posts. A post written when hormones levels are at optimal balance. A post written on the heels of a child-free morning. A post I had been waiting to write for over 2 years. I was in a moment of maternal irrationality content.

Wanna know a secret? Come closer…

The minute I hit “publish” on any lovey-dovey post that might offer hope to parents… Hell rolls into town on all 4 wheels…

Hmmm. What am I trying to say? Let me put it this way — I don’t pray for patience. When one prays for patience one prays for pain. In the same way, I am thinking of not writing the ooey-gooey-lovey-mommy stuff. It is Just. Like. Praying. For. Patience.

Old College Pals – My Rachel

Friends. This is my friend Rachel. We met in college back in the ‘91. Probably some of you weren’t even born then *wrinkles forming*… I digress. Rachel and I haven’t seen each other in… Oh… We have no idea how long it has been… Say, 6 to 8 years, give or take :) Too. Darn. Long.

Golly heck! We still look young enough to be in college! (Shhhh! Please do not pop my illusion of youthfulness, not today…). Rachel flew into town yestrday for a conference. She asked if I could come to the big city and play. I was all, “Duh!” And she was all, “Wooooo! Gigglegiggle!” And I was all, “Squeeee!!! My Rachel!!!.”

So I took the ferry and headed to the city. We went to dinner and talked. Imagine the amount of words exchanged. EPIC.

An Xbox Cake

I will start this post with honesty. I did NOT make an Xbox cake. Sure… I could have made it… but I didn’t. My sister-in-law made it for my nephew’s birthday last week. I am pretty sure, though, that somehow that cake was inspired by me. Pretty sure. One thing I am certain of, however is this: my sister-in-law is pretty much made out of Awesome. Ya wanna know why? She saved me a row of cake:

But you don’t care about my row of cake… now do you? You want to see the masterpiece created by the genius hands of my SIL… Yes you do… and the “frosting” is fondant:

Pretty incredible – ehh? I helped. I ate a row of cake. I also watched her roll out the fondant. Hey! Here’s a close-up of the controllers. The black knobbies are made out of gum paste:

I made a cake decorated with fondant once. I tried to make fondant ribbons (the cake was supposed to be a wrapped baby shower gift cake). I almost lost my salvation over that. Making fondant defy gravity is not for the faint of heart. I actually made it for my SIL’s baby shower… I ended up having to use curling ribbon for my “present” cake.

It turned out cute despite my failing, but my vision was FONDANT ribbons. I am not happy when my vision … um… is impaired… Anyway… In short, I pretty much attempted to do something even trained professionals run from. So, really, Kerry (my SIL) had it easy compared to me. I mean… alls she had to do was roll out feet of fondant, cut cake into the shape of controllers, research gum paste, cook several cakes, make the frosting to go under the fondant, poke a billion holes, and just a few other detail Xbox-y items.

I leave you with one word of wisdom: if you decide to work with fondant — buy it already made. Do yourself a favor… working with fondant is infuriating, but obviously can have a big pay-off. Don’t add to your burden by making the stuff. You will save a bundle in sanity.

P.S. Did you see the AT-AT Walker cake my SIL made last year? The woman has a gift. And also, did I mention she saved me a row of cake :)

Make Me Laugh Monday – Unrealistically Large Heads

Don’t you forget, my friends: “All head sizes are beautiful!” and “Beauty comes in all head sizes.”

Also, just say “NO!!!” *hands waving above head as you run for your life* to Bratz dolls.

***I want to give a shout-out to my friend Jen C. on the East Coast, yo… for bringing this video to my attention. You. Rock. My. World.***
