05.09.08 - Fridge Friday

Greetings Internets! It is with excitement and international delight I present to you…

Jennyonthespot’s first Guest Fridge….

***drum roll**

Liz’s Fridge!!!

Who is Liz?” Well, Liz lives in a 500 year old thatched roof home in the UK! I! know! It’s dreamy. If you read her “about” page you will learn she was born in the Bahamas. I was born and raised in the armpit of Californ-eye-aye, but she has lived in places with names such as Andalusia, Geneva & Sicily (to name only a few). She visits London reguarly (as I understand) and how. cool. is. that? I “met” Liz when I when I happened upon this post of hers via Blogging Basics 101. I went to her site to gain some insight on the whole hit/visitor/page view thing. It was very helpful!

As a result of my visit to her blog, she visited mine - and happened upon a Fridge Friday post where she noticed the enormity of my American fridge… she likened the interior to “Aladdin’s Cave”, which inspired the theme for last week’s Fridge Friday post! I was curious… what does a fridge from the UK look like. Liz has been so gracious to humor me and generously supply me with lots of British fridge shots - ooh, doesn’t that just sound so racy!

Some things I learned: their “corriander” is our “cilantro”… I like their packaging better - cleaner, simpler, even classier… Sausage is huge in the UK (Jen, Lisa, get your minds out of the gutter already)…. but ice is not so huge… The freezer is separate from the fridge… Hers is in another room… “They” eat cheddar too… Liz? Is French and Italian cheese a staple - or do you just have an international palate?… Do you HAVE to make your own ice cream, or do you prefer to?

OK, below are a number of the pics Liz made available for this here post, but there are more! Go here to view them all, with her personal notes explaining what’s inside. You know you’re curious… How DO they live “across the pond”?

Thanks Liz!!!

This is fascinating. Very good fridge friday, Jenny and Liz.

And yes, I knew the sausages are bigger in Britain. The better to go with those darling accents. ;) Sorry, had to go there.

I’m always fascinted by the food of other cultures. I’d never realized you could get ghee like that. I have to go to the Indian market and buy a little container that costs the earth. On the other hand, my tomatoes only cost 2-3 dollars.

What a fascinating idea Jenny had - I could not help but contribute.

Food is very very expensive here. We have just been to the supermarket and spent the equivalent of $350 on just half a trolley full. Oh well! But our Ghee is cheap Jennielelynn.

The British fry up breakfast is very unhealthy but we all fall for it once in a while. There are specialist sausage makers here and the sausage is an integral part of British food culture. I only buy the most expensive ones but then I am a bit of a food snob.

As for the question regarding foreign food - well here, it is a class thing. Class used to mean how much money you had and how much land you owned (in the distant past), but now is more a function of how much education you have and how much money you have. The middle classes tend to be more food adventurous and spend more money on making sure their eating habits reflect their holiday destinations. I am afraid that does describe me.

But others will prefer more staple British food which will not include the French and Italian cheeses, nor the French drinks etc. I don’t feel complete unless I internationalise my life. That is true for me and many of my friends. Frequent foreign travel is a sort of understated badge of honour you wear But it only counts amongst others who feel the same way. Some others will pride themselves on NOT traveling. It takes all sorts - but the food habits, and contents of the fridges will differ between the two groups.

That said Cheddar cheese is English, and practically everyone eats that. Heard of a Ploughmans Lunch? That would nowadays be eaten in pubs and would be crusty bread, pickles, a huge lump of Cheddar Cheese, butter, lettuce, tomatoes etc. It is a traditional lunch with warm English beer.

In two weeks time I shall be in London for a few days again and will be trying to get a table at one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants in Chelsea (cannot wait). You know don’t you as he has a famous restaurant in New York I think?

I don’t have to make my own ice-cream but I prefer to. I love to cook in general so any excuse to make as much as possible from first principles.

Hope I haven’t bored you with all this. Thanks again Jen for an brilliant idea.

    Lizzy

Wow….that was so cool! What an amazing home! 500 years old?!? Can you imagine the stories inside those walls? Thanks for sharing Jen, and Liz!

Liz, you don’t know me, but I think if you’re not already married, I wanna meet you! Dang girl, that fridge is beyouuuuuuutiful. Wow. I’m off to scrape last year’s Jell-O off the bottom shelf with a butter knife now.

Lizulfisa - there are stories in the walls you know. I get the sense that the ghosts of the people who lived here before (if you believe such things - spend a few nights here alone and you will!), are content someone is trying to stop the house from falling apart. And as you read my link that Jenny referred to above you’ll understand it’s fairly challenging. Am I wasting my life? Should I be in southern Spain drinking and watching the sun go down?

Stacey - unfortunately I am already married! But if ever you want to spend a few days in Ye Olde England! Come On Down!!

I hope Jenny allows you to post all your fridges sometime soon.
