Party On

Ultimate Blog Party 2008

Hey party people! If you grabbed your drink and danced under the disco ball 3 posts ago - welcome back! Have a few more strawberries, and plop yourself on the couch. I need to go get some more ice… If you have just gotten here for the party… go here and here. I like to talk so much, I needed two posts. There are still a few days left, and I saw over 1150 folks on the party list… So that means about 1125 of you should still be coming by… right? We have to visit and comment to everyone… right? Right?

If you didn’t come for the party - this is your lucky day! I have laid out quite a spread, and there is enough for everyone.

You know what I forgot though? My youngest’s birthday. She’ll be 3. HER. PARTY. Fortunately, her birthday isn’t until Thursday (yes, THIS Thursday), but I got nuttin’. No hats. No cake plans. No PRESENT! Martha Stewart might take a ruler to my knuckles if she knew.

I feel a little bad for not pondering and planning all the adorable details, but age has…. welll… it’s aged me. My expectations have lowered. So has my bust-line. I’m sorry. That was totally inappropriate. I guess what I am trying to say is this: what used to seem so darned critical, is not so much. The details will come together, and I used to need to create my own invites, create my own cakes, create cute favors, and decorate the living daylights outta any possible decorate-able space. Balloons! Flowers! Streamers! Pirate flags! Kazoos and tablecloths! Olay!

I would love to do that still. I just don’t feel like it is necessary anymore. My sanity, now that’s necessary. I totally enjoy the effort others put into their own kids’ parties, and if that gives them joy, then, “stinkin’ beautiful”! It used to be a joy for me. I sometimes wish it still was.

But something in me changed some where between turning 32 and having a third child. Sanity, perhaps. Maybe when I gave birth to Lucy, my body stopped producing the glue gun hormone and cake decorating hormone that once ran so thick through my veins. I LOVED creating those cakes. Oh, and double sided tape… wonder of all wonders… Fortunately, I am able to live vicariously through my sister-in-law’s mad cake skillz

And there we go.

It’s not old age, or coming to your senses…it’s just a basic universal truth: kids flipping love WHATEVER festifus you throw down for them…all the fancy parties, generous helpings of crap, Martha Stewart decorating is a show we put on for all the people around us, the grown ups….here’s what I think would make kids the happiest….a “cardboard box” party….every kid gets a fridge box and washable markers in every hue…..you know it’s true. Kids would be talking about it for years. After you’re done, recycle–viola! Clean…..

I think you’re right about the third child thing. I have no desire to go overboard for birthdays. Though looking at Andrea’s handwork makes me think perhaps it is time to step up my Mommy game.

Hi! Just party hopping through - thanks for making me laugh and for your little one - who needs to decorate cakes when you can get a decorated ice cream cake from Dairy Queen? :)

Happy Birthday Lucy! We did “decorate your own cucakes” for my neices third birthday. Perfect becuase it’s an activity AND you don’t have to make a pretty cake.

yeah - I never got those hormones - just the “need more chocolate” ones

Hi - just passing by. Great to meet you & hear about your family. Don’t worry about the party thing - they’ve got to have something to go into therapy for when they’re grown and it’s always the mother’s fault anyway.

Have a blessed day & stop by for a visit.

    “My sanity, now that's necessary”

I now the feeling my friend. One of the reasons I wanted to be a stay at home mom was so that I could do stuff like completely creative and homemade, but cool parties for my kids. I had fun with it until my first child’s third birthday. And now that I have three and their birthdays are all within four months of each other . . . yeah, they are lucky if I remember the ice cream and the cake itself all in the same party!

I forgot to ask, “Are there any strawberries left?!”

Happy early b’day to your little one! Yes sanity is most important. I am still a nut whenit comes to my kids parties, but have learned to let things go a lot and not worry as much. A stressed mommy means no one’s happy:) Have fun partying and if you get time stop by mine http://www.littlepiddles.blogspot.com
