Reflection

Last year I ran my first half-marathon. Yesterday’s race was my third. I have been pondering how different each Seattle Marathon experience was… Here, let me tell you all about it.

2006: GREAT pain descending and ascending stairs, returning to standing position, almost any movement involving my legs, and a stomach ache – all lasting around 3 days.
2007: a little tightness in my calves and that one part of the upper leg (I never took Anatomy and Physiology in college, I took pottery, voice lessons, piano lessons and more pottery, and got my B.A., not a B.S... the most “science” I took was poli sci, which I still have nightmares about, but I’m rambling again…), and a 10 hour stomach ache.

2006: snow, sleet, rain… wet shoes, wet everything, and we ran with trashs bag over our torsos to keep dry for the first 10 miles.
2007: clear and “sunny”… around 40 degrees and I wore my sunglasses.

2006: my chip time was 2:18:42
2007: my chip time was 2:00:52.5

2006: Katie and I just wanted to finish. F to the INISH. If we had to walk at some point (which we only did for a portion of the Hill of Demons) we’d be OK if it meant we would be able to move ourselves across the finish line. We held tightly to the triple E theory – no Emoting, no Excretion, no Expiration…
2007: “Hey Katie, my dream would be if we could make it in under 2 hours.” “Really, Jenny? Ok, let’s try!” In our training we never spoke of dying or walking… Triple E was never mentioned. We didn’t make it under 2 hours, but I am not complaining… we were 53 seconds off… that’s nuthin’. We ran the event 1 minute faster than our 12 mile run the week before!

Now for the burning question – “Did you ever eat that ice cream?” You bet yer britches! After my stomach stopped yelling and screaming and twisting and kicking (for 10 hours)… I had the most lovely date with Ben and Jerry – Chubby Hubby. To all my wonderful supporters of my yearning for such loveliness… thank you. Thank You. You know there was much rejoicing all the way to the bottom of the peanut-butter-filled-chocolate-covered-pretzel-with-chocolate-and-
peanut-butter-swirls-in-malty-vanilla-ice-cream pint. Yes. All. The. Way. To. The. Bottom. Not only was I doing something for me, but I was enjoying it for you too… I was :) You know, my friend once described something she loved as, “Puffy pink hearts and swooping blue birdies”…. yes, that was the love I felt…

I get to wear the Finisher shirt!

A little after 9:30 this morning, Katie and I crossed the finish line of the 2007 Seattle Marathon (ahem, half-marathon). It was the best possible November morning in Seattle… the low 40’s and clear. It was beautiful, and I even wore my sunglasses for awhile!

I mentioned to Katie a little before we set our feet a-runnin’ that my dream would be to run it in under 2 hours. We decided we could at least try… and the pace of our first 6 miles fed that hope – 9 minute miles! Somewhere between 6 and 8 miles we lost a couple of minutes due to a pretty good series of hills, but we made up much of it by mile 10.

I know, just cut to the chase Jenny (haha, chase, like chasing the finish… haha…)! We finished in 2 hours and 52 seconds. That works out to a 9 minute 14 second mile (we were shooting for a 9 minute and 8 second mile). That’s not so bad! I keep sayin’ the .1 of the 13.1 is the hardest part of the run, and clearly it is. If it wasn’t for that .1, then we’d have made it right under the 2 hour mark. One tenth of a mile, *snicker* why is that so dog-gone important anyway…

I can’t forget Ellie! I need to give props to Ellie, Katie’s daughter… she finished in just over 1 hour and 46 minutes. Awesome job girl!

Gotta get some rest…

The event is tomorrow. Today was packet pick-up and then our family along with my running buddy’s family headed to Zoo Lights. Alas, we arrived home a bit later than anticipated. So I have just pulled all my gear together, and now I am off to get some rest. I hope I can fall asleep quickly, because the alarm will go off at 3:50 a.m.

The Hives

No, I am not using an article to precede the name of a skin condition (ex: the Walmart, the Costco, the Barnes and Noble)… I am talking about a new band. I guess they are not a new band, but they are new to me… and I dig ‘em.

I always keep my ear open for new running/workout music, and I somehow came across The Hives. They’re a little funky, a little punky, a little surfy, alternative-y, rocky…  they even sound a little angry at times, which is very motivating when running up a mean hill.

Speaking as a mother, I can discern one or two bad words in the songs I have listened to… and there are some concepts I prefer my kids not to adopt… so I reserve most of their songs for my Shuffle. Then I crank up the volume as I head up a hill on my outside runs or try to increase speed on the treadmill for a little interval push. Tick, tick, boom…

Covet

I have a small obsession. Converse. You see these shoes right here? They are a pair of red Chuck Taylors. Guess what Converse has come out with now… Nope… Nope… Nope… I don’t know… Nope… You give?

Red Sequined All Star Chucks!

No, I will not shut up. Red. Sequined. All Stars. Maybe if Dorothy had those in her day she might have ridden a skateboard on that yellow brick road…

I can’t breathe. I think I could cry.

And we’re off!

What does Thanksgiving morning look like at Jenny’s house?

Jenny takes a shower.

Jenny discovers she froze her refrigerator cinnamon roll dough (’cause Jenny doesn’t “do” homemade cinnamon rolls).

Jenny goes to ***Mart for more cinnamon roll dough… with wet hair and in sub-freezing temperatures.

Icicles form on Jenny’s hair.

Jenny skids on the frosty road only once.

Jenny returns safely home and places dough on greased cookie sheet.

As she places the sheet of rolls in oven, Jenny drops all of the rolls in the 350 degree preheated oven. The rolls cozy up together in the crease of the oven door… Isn’t that cute…
Jenny is off to a great start.

Where’s that turkey?

Maybe it’s for the best…

It’s really difficult for a “stay at home mom” to get to the liquor store. I do believe children are not permitted inside, and if they are – that’s just uncomfortable. Additionally, it doesn’t look real good if Mommy leaves the Kiddies in the car while she runs in for to replenish her laundry supply.

Oh well, I shouldn’t “do the laundry” until after Sunday anyway.

I am so sorry…

As soon as the event is over, I will go back to writing about knitting, housekeeping, and proper hygiene. The exciting stuff, I promise.

*I went to the grocery store this evening. Again. Anywho… It was flippin’ cold outside. It was 36 degrees, and I could feel the sharp teeth of the chill biting my butt – literally. Until tonight, I thought I would wear my running capris on Sunday. But after tonight – NU-UH. No she di’ent. *snap* It’s back to the cozy fleecy-lined, long running pants. Yep, that’s what I’ve decided to do.

*Taper Week is awesome. I’m still moving, but I think getting through Saturday’s 12-mile-run was a HUGE milestone for me.

*Over the last 2 weeks I have eliminated most caffeine. I am checking if the caffeine benefits my performance. It seems it does not and therefore, I can forgo that race-morning latte’ and forgo a stop or two along the 13.1 mile course to visit a Port-O-Let. I hope.

*Gu – check. Got my two packets this afternoon from the local running store. I like the chocolate. It tastes like brownie batter :)

*1 toenail down… and maybe another is on it’s way out. I finally got a new pair of running shoes, but not before the damage was done. Apparently, my feet needed a half-size larger. What is that all about?

Did you hear me?

…squeal like a cheerleader who, like, just found, like, the perfect outfit for the last day of cheer camp?! *flip hair…smack gum*

How do I say this and not sound… obsessed. Hmmm… My name is Jenny and I am a Chubbaholic. Uh, this isn’t really coming out right. Let’s try this again. My name is Jenny and I love Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream. Truly. True love. Pure love… You can almost hear the birds singing…

I found Chubby Hubby today (after months of NOT finding it)! There was great rejoicing in my grocer’s freezer section. Don’t worry, I didn’t do a round-off or pull the pom-poms outta my purse. I just held a pint in my hands kissed it and put it back… after Sunday… after Sunday
