Words From Your Mutha…

I stumbled upon a hilarious video from Toni. It’s called, “Here’s Some Total Momsense”… I tried to load the video from YouTube here, but you know thos API keys… if you DON”T know… you’re in good company here. I did find it, but it’s still not working. Maybe this topic is a better fit for TechieSchmechie

Anywho… watch the clip. Do it! Because I said so!

For the new mommies…

Here’s a bit of info you ladies won’t read in one of those new mom books. You know the ones - Yay! I’m Bursting into Motherhood with a Smile a Burp Cloth and a Trendy Diaper Bag!

If you have not yet had to do the following, odds are you will. You know your handy-dandy baby front pack?

Someday you’ll have to figure out how to go to the bathroom while sporting one of those with a 12 pound baby, a full baldder, and a stubborn zipper.

Not every bathroom has a table to strap down baby. And if you are front-packin’ junior/princess, you probably don’t have a stroller with you. What other options do you have, but rival the skills mostly reserved for gymnasts and performers for Cirque du Soleil? I am here to tell you you are not the only one. Just pray that when you gave birth to that baby you didn’t also give birth to your sense of balance.

Count on it. I’m just keepin’ it real ladies… someone’s gotta get this information out there.

Small = Medium

I went through a drive-thru tonight… and ordered a small. The total that was announced seemed a bit high. When I pulled to the window I said, “Now you heard I wanted ’small’…” She said, “No, you ordered a medium.”

I supposed she might have heard “medium” when I said “small”. You know, since “small” and “medium” start and end with the same letters… Or maybe it’s because both words have the same number of syllables. *scratch* *sniff* Is this a scratch and sniff post? Because I think I smell a little bit of sarcasm…

Feels Like Finals

This is quite a week. To start off, I locked my keys out of my car at the gym on Monday morning (early), so my workout was me running home. It was actiually a nice run - only 3.5 miles. The problem was Monday was supposed to be one of my “easy” days since the half-marathon is this Sunday. It’s “taper week”… maybe training-wise, but not life.

There’s this, then that, then that, then this, then that and that and that and this… It is reminiscent of finals week in college. I don’t like feeling this way. One of the best feelings of my life was the moment I realized I never had to do another all-nighter. OK, I don’t think I’ll be pulling an all-nighter, but… it’s just that feeling that you could keep on and on and do more and more but not really be completely done. It’s like studying, you can always put in more effort - until THE DAY. In my case, it’s a series of days.

I can’t wait for Friday.

How Cool is This?

My new heart-rate monitor stores my workout info for each week. Today it told me to check my totals… So I did… Last week I :

  • had 10 work-out sessions (I separate strength times and cardio)
  • tallied 8 hours, 30 minutes and 15 seconds of excercise
  • burned 3,373 calories (127 calories short of 1 pound)
  • just under 3 hours were in my “light” zone (probably dring strength training/weights), 4 hours in the “moderate” range, and a little over 1 hour in the “hard” zone

That’s cool. I dig info.

Blast from the Past

I got an email from classmates.com - er - a former college pal who contacted me through classmates.com. Hey Jen, you remember Ricardo? Yeah, him!

I’ll just copy what he wrote in his blog, but I won’t link there because he just “closed” it yesterday (said bloggin is too 2006)… stinker! But Amanda’s (his wife) is still up, so I’ll link to hers

There is only a handful of people from my college years that I will always remember.  Meet one of them, Jenny.  Jenny and I worked as Resident Assistants in the dorms and we clicked since the first day we met.  We were both goof offs and felt that part of our job was to make people laugh.  This week I found Jenny through Classmates and learned that she also has a blog…

He nailed it. When I received the email from him, I laughed… just the memory of “Billy Bob Fred Barney Smith-Jones” (you had to be there) got me giggling. We laughed. A. Lot. I think that’s a big reason I survived being an R.A. It’s fun to reconnect and find out where life has taken old friends.

Oh, and he found and posted a picture of him and I dressed to the nines for our Senior Class fashion show - from 1995. Oh my heck! 12 years ago? TWELVE YEARS AGO???!!! I can’t figure out how to put it here, but honestly… I’m probably doing you-all a favor :)

t w e l v e

OK, our 12 mile run this morning was quite enjoyable! We covered 12 miles in 2 hours and 5ish minutes (I forgot to set my watch when we started).

I did some things different this time.

  • I got up extra-early to feed my body better… oatmeal from whole oats (not the instant package) and whole grain bread toast smothered in chunky almond butter and a bit of raspberry jelly. Yum.
  • I bought a fanny pack. Not really, but kinda really. It’s a running pack that has a water bottle holder and two little zippered pouches. I filled one pouch with Gu, a Carb BOOM! and 6 Endurolyte capsules. I put my cell phone and 20 bucks in the other - in case I tanked and decided to run to the nearest latte stand and call for a ride home… I filled the water bottle with straight water. Sports drinks upset my stomach. I tried Heed (a powder to add to one’s water that contains much less sugar than typical sports drinks) earlier in the week, but the taste left me feeling unsatisfied.
  • I wore the coolest clothes I own. Not “cool” like, I’m so trendy, but “cool” like, I’m not gonna get heat stroke. Like running shorts and a tank instead of running capris and a T.

What I learned - it’s worth 15 fewer minutes of sleep if it means you eat well before a long distance energy push. I learned I could have used more water. I consumed one Gu and one Carb BOOM! and one Endurolyte. I might have benefited from one more Gu and a bit more water. I think my last 2 miles might have been a little peppier. This is also confirmed by the fact I smelled just the wee-est hint of ammonia. So clearly, my body could have used a bit more fuel.

It was a stunning morning. Yes, there were hills, but they didn’t seem as mean this week. There was a good amount of shade… and the last 1.5 miles were mostly downhill. My knee did bother me (beginning around mile 4), and we walked for a short period of time because of it. However, it kept the pace the last several miles, and I kinda played with my stride and angle of my foot to easy the discomfort. Yeah, prolly not the best plan, but that’s what I did. What? Are you gonna tell my mommy er sumthin’?

The 11th Hour

Ok, maybe it’s the 12th hour. Tomorrow is our planned 12 mile training run. As each Saturday brings an added mile to our distance, “Reasonable Jenny” asks, “WHY am I doing this?”
I am feeling a little concerned this week, as opposed to a general sense of dread. I struggle to manage knee pain I’ve been dealing with since my last half - with a good amount of success. Actions I have taken to care for this “bum” knee range from physical therapy, taping my knee so that the kneecap sits closer to God’s intended kneecap path, and custom orthotics. Moderate success until Tuesday.

Tuesday’s 5 mile run changed things. By the end of mile 4, a different area of my knee began to hurt. It got to the point of such pain, I decided to walk. Erg. Katie even stayed with me. My other knee pain has not brought me to that end. We probably walked about a quarter mile, and I was glad to have been able to run the remaining distance.

I was planning on getting in at least 2 more runs this week before Saturday, but the plan changed. I took a spin class on Wednesday and swam on Thursday. I hoped that a couple days of cross-training would help. I hopped on the treadmill at the gym this morning. It was a perfect morning to run outside, but I decided the flatter and softer surface and would be kinder. I took it easy and steady. I made it to 2.7 miles, and the slightest hint of that other pain returned. I stopped immediately.

I dunno what to expect. I don’t want to expect the pain tomorrow (to will it into happening), but I don’t want to be unprepared. I definitely don’t want this thing to foil 8 weeks of purposeful training. Maybe I should call my PT… maybe I want to pretend it’s not a big deal… maybe I want my knee to work as long as my ticker does… “WHY am I doing this?
