I see my kids in their cookies…

Livi’s cookie

Joel’s cookie

Livi’s aftermath

As I expected, Joel’s cookie was decorated precisely and the design was well-planned. Olivia marveled at the colors, consistency and smells – her tactile bent was her guide.

I love that I know this about my kids. I adore Joel’s deliberate thinking. I marvel at his need for order. Just as Joel needs structure, Olivia thrives on whimsey and chaos. These opposing qualities drive me mad – more often than I want to admit – especially when blooming in young children who struggle in balancing these extremes. However, these are the very traits that grow my heart toward them. They are the things that help me know them, help me mother them, and help me express my love to them in ways they “get”…

Why “tagless” is a good idea…

Oh, and wearing one’s pants right-side out…

Cheater, Cheater, Pumpkin Eater

I didn’t bake them, make the frosting or even gather the sprinkles… It all came in a super-handy kit! Yes, it would appear I did a bit of cheating, if eliminating the mess (well, most of it) and saving a couple hours is cheating. We got to hit the very best part right away – the frosting and the sprinkles — oh the sprinkles…

Unsalted Butter = Why bother?

I don’t get it. Martha Stewart seems to use it in every recipe that calls for butter. I use the regular stuff. I guess I’m a rebel after all.

But seriously… is there a reason (like maintaining some sort of chemical balance), or is it simply to limit salt intake/salty flavor? I haven’t been able to taste the difference. It escapes me… if I’m gonna eat a stick of butter (bathed in flour, sugar, vanilla, eggs and chocolate chips) then why skip the salt? In my opinion, butter isn’t butter without the salt.

I think I’ll put this post under my “wellness” category… While I am categorizing, I guess I should include it under the “guilt” category too…
