In February, my husband and I had a karaoke party at our house. Everyone had a ball - only 3 people did not take the risk and sing. I sang that night, but I was with friends, in my home. Friday night I stepped WAY out of my comfort zone. I went to a local restaurant/bar with 3 girlfriends. I knew it was karaoke night, but did not plan on joining in. I guess I\’ve always struggled with peer pressure to an extent. Friday night it happened again.
It all began so innocently. Looking throught the song list, talking about what sounds fun, then I began to feel the REAL pressure. Apparently, L promised the other 2 if they came over (had a ferry ride to join us) we\’d sing a song. Ah-ha! So began the downward spiral. . . The DJ called our stage name (we gave our daughter\’s names) and we walked to the front. My heart raced, my limbs shaked and my voicebox did too! Might I add, I had no alcohol in my system whatsoever! No liquid courage to lean on! You know, I had done some singing in an ensemble high school, took some voice lessons too, but I have never conquered my \”nervous voice\” syndrome…
The short musical interlude began, then L and I open our vocal instruments. . . \”At first I was afraid, I was petrified. . . \”. I Will Survive was the perfect pick. I took a deep breath when the lyrical timing was correct, and belted away. It helped to have a buddy belting away too. We closed our eyes, through out some disco moves and grooves, and the crowd joined on in too! There\’s something about pulling in a crowd! L and I were pretty proud of ourselves, as well as the 2 who manipulated us to do it. We didn\’t scare the patrons either. Cool:)
Our second \”at bat\” was a little less successful. Copa Cabana. Not my favorite, but L really wanted to do it, more peer pressure. My caution, Barry Manilow - man singer. I\’m a girl. Caution #2, I probably hadn\’t heard the song in 15 years. Yeah, everyone knows the chorus, but when you have a mic. . . Turns out, neither of those things should have been my concern. My concern should have been the (what seemed like) 2 HOUR LONG musical interlude in the middle of the song, AND starting the song off key — never to find the \”on\” key the whole way through!
It was late, and time to go. As we put on our coats and grabbed our purses, I hear the beat. It\’s a song I know well. It\’s a song that many despise, but I was young and didn\’t know better. Da da da dada da dum, da da da dada da dum, Ice, Ice Baby. It\’s terrible. A grown woman! It was too weak to resist. Suddenly, I was back in my living room at my 18th birthday party playing the tape I was given as a gift - Vanilla Ice. L and I rushed up to the front and boogied. Ridiculous, for certain, but pretty fun too:)
Hmmm… what song will I sing next time……?
